Hundreds of Activists March in Madison for Man Shot After Pulling Knife on and Injuring Police
Hundreds of activists marched through Madison, Wisconsin, protesting the police shooting of Corey Ruiz. Ruiz, 38, was shot after pulling a knife during a confrontation with officers responding to reports of property crimes. One officer suffered a knife wound during the struggle. 75,000 Noncitizens Summoned for Jury Duty in New Jersey Each Year
Approximately 75,000 noncitizens are summoned for jury duty in New Jersey annually, according to judiciary figures. The state processes more than one million jury summonses using records from the Division of Elections, Division of Taxation and Motor Vehicle Commission. About 20% of respondents are disqualified for eligibility reasons, with one-quarter of those due to lack of U.S. citizenship. Officials say safeguards prevent noncitizens from serving. The disclosure coincides with revelations of noncitizens improperly added to voter rolls.
Peer-Reviewed Study Finds Abortion Drug Mifepristone in US Drinking Water
A peer-reviewed study published in Issues in Law & Medicine detected measurable levels of the abortion drug mifepristone in municipal tap water from Austin, Texas; Blacksburg, Virginia; and Carbondale, Illinois. Researchers found anti-progesterone activity consistent with the drug in eight of nine sampling categories, with concentrations up to 0.041 micrograms per liter. Conventional water treatment did not consistently remove the compound. The authors noted potential risks to aquatic animals and human fertility, pregnancy, and fetal development as an endocrine-disrupting substance. The study has been submitted to the EPA for review.
FBI Most Wanted COVID Fraud Fugitive Captured in Jamaica
Elaine Angene Escoe, a 41-year-old listed on the FBI’s Most Wanted Fraudsters list, was arrested in Jamaica while using a fake identity and returned to the United States. Prosecutors allege she helped fraudulently obtain more than $32 million in COVID-19 relief funds. She faces charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. Hawaii Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke Indicted in State Corruption Probe
An Oahu grand jury indicted Hawaii Lt. Gov. Sylvia (D) Luke on charges of criminal conspiracy to commit bribery, bribery and falsifying candidate committee reports. Four others were also indicted, including former state Rep. Minnesota public schools are set to receive MyGender Dolls featuring removable and swappable genitalia for use with children ages 4 to 10 this fall. The paper dolls were developed by researchers at the University of Minnesota Medical School over six years and funded by taxpayers. They include interchangeable clothing, accessories, and hairstyles.
