Woke Biden US Department of Defense Scrapping Merit-Based Military for 'Diversity' & 'Inclusion'

As the Biden administration does the unthinkable in stoking the flames of conflict with Russian President Vladimir Putin, one would think the leadership at the Pentagon would be fully focused on planning a response to worst-case scenarios. But a tweet exposed that a great deal of attention at the US Department of Defense (DoD) is centered not on the possibility of war, but on the need for "diversity" and "inclusion" in the military.

"NEWS: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Are Necessities in US Military," the DoD posted last Wednesday. The tweet featured an article celebrating the many ways the military is pushing diversity in its ranks. The article read that there is a "need for diversity, equity, and inclusion to be a consideration or a part of all decisions in the military."

In the article, Bishop Garrison, the senior advisor to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin for Human Capital and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, said, "I would hope that as many leaders and members of the total force as possible see [diversity, equity, and inclusion] efforts as a force multiplier" adding that the diversity and inclusion scheme should be viewed as a "way to make the US military more successful in achieving critical missions and in making forces more lethal."

The tweet and article drew immediate criticism on social media with the overwhelming majority of commenters slamming Pentagon leadership for focusing on "woke" politics over military capability.

Last month, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby shrugged off concerns that Pentagon leadership was damaging the capabilities of the US Armed Forces by employing Woke identity politics. 

"This argument of ‘wokeness’ in the military...I can tell you, things like diversity and inclusion make us a better military because it brings to the fore in the decision-making, the operational decision-making that we conduct, better ideas, more unique perspectives, somebody else's lived experiences which might actually make us smarter on the battlefield," Kirby told an interviewer. "So we know, those kinds of arguments, I think, are ridiculous because we are a stronger military because of our diversity and because we represent all Americans, just like we defend all Americans."

Why This Is Important

The mission of the US military is not to reflect the demographics of the people of the United States. It is to put the best military on the field of battle so as to defeat the enemy and defend the United States. To that end, the US Armed Forces must be comprised of the best of the best. It is a meritocracy, not a social justice experiment.

The idea that an effective, lethal, and superior military force can be achieved through the use of race and gender quotas is the stuff that affords a recipe for defeat. Wokeism does not facilitate a superior fighting force. By its very nature – the institution of “equity of outcome” – it can’t; it is not possible.

The question about the value of meritocracy has been asked in many ways:

• Does the color of someone’s skin, their gender, their nationality, or religion matter when you are laying on an operating table? Or do you want the best most educated person for the job to be cutting you open or tending to your injuries?

• If you are trapped in a burning building, does it matter if the person coming to rescue you is Black, White, Hispanic, or Asian? Do you care if it’s a man or a woman or someone who identifies as one of the other gazillion gender choices? Or do you place more importance on their physical strength and knowledge of rescue and firefighting techniques?

• If a gangbanger is holding a gun to your head in a hostage situation, do you stand proud and unconcerned because your local police department has the most diverse and inclusive force? Or are you hoping that the police officer responding is the best person for the job; has the best negotiating demeanor or, in the worst-case scenario, the best aim?

• When we here at home in the United States are informed by our elected leaders that our military is being ordered into battle to defend our country, do we care that those who are standing that wall are diverse, that the ranks have been assembled in an inclusive manner, or do we want the best warfighters that can possibly be assembled standing between us and harm's way?

If you are being honest with yourself the answers are obvious. In each scenario, the intelligent amongst us will opt for the best trained and capable one-hundred percent of the time, skin color, gender, religion, and any other “diversity and inclusion rubric” be damned.

The social justice theory of “diversity and inclusion” is necessarily a diminisher of excellence in our society. Whenever the most qualified are passed over because of skin color, gender, or any other social engineering rubric, that means the most qualified – the best person for that position – is not in that position. So, instead of continuously raising the bar for future applicants and/or position seekers, the bar is continuously lowered to satisfy the false excellence of social justice’s limitations.

The United States rose to preeminent leadership in the world because we – all of us as individuals and together as groups – always strove for excellence; to be the best. The social engineering manipulation employed by the Woke fascist-Left is redefining “mediocrity” to actually mean “excellence,” the latter being measured by quota statistics.

So, the ultimate question about “inclusion and diversity” being a thing for the US military is this. Would you rather win the war and preserve freedom and your rights as sovereign citizens? Or would you rather be able to celebrate how diverse your losing military was in battle as you sew together the new Nikes alongside the Uyghur slaves in Communist China?

If you choose to be free then we must re-invest in American excellence and American individualism and that means dispensing with the Woke Balkanization of our people; the fascist-Left induced tribalism of difference.
