California Lets Applicants Skip License and Social Security on Voter Forms
An investigative reporter demonstrated that California’s online voter registration portal accepts applications without either a state driver’s license or a Social Security number. The Secretary of State’s site says those fields may be left blank and a county will assign a number. First-time federal voters who skipped those numbers may be asked for ID. State rules list gym cards, insurance cards, credit cards, and student IDs among acceptable photo documents. Most voters are not required to show ID at the polls.

Military Judge Tosses 9/11 Mastermind Confession as Involuntary
A military judge on Friday excluded Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’s 2007 FBI confession from the Sept. 11 case, ruling the statements were not given voluntarily. Air Force Lt. Col. Michael Schrama found prosecutors failed to prove the alleged plotter spoke freely after CIA detention that included waterboarding and isolation. The judge cited an unbroken continuation of psychological coercion at Guantanamo Bay and the FBI’s failure to tell Mohammed he could remain silent or consult a lawyer. Trial for Mohammed and three co-defendants is set for June 2028 after prosecutors’ bid for a January 2027 start was rejected. Chief prosecutor Rear Adm. Aaron C. Rugh said the government will review whether to appeal.

Documents Show CIA Pact With Fauci’s NIAID on Forensic Virus Research
An interagency agreement entered into the Senate record shows the CIA’s Biological Technology Center partnered with NIAID on forensic microbiology of bioterrorism pathogens. CIA funds were to leverage unclassified NIH virus work to complement agency research. The CIA would help obtain the germs, and NIAID could not release the data without CIA permission. Sen. Rand Paul posted the hearing record Friday, including CIA fund transfers to NIAID. State-media-style public-health branding sat atop a spy-shop data lock.
X Flags 200,000-Account Chinese Bot Farm Targeting Data Center Debate
X said its safety team found a suspected Chinese bot farm of about 200,000 inauthentic accounts. Two hundred of those accounts posted that AI data centers raise household power bills and strain the grid and shared cartoons of operators profiting at public expense. X said the activity could manipulate debate over U.S. AI and energy policy and that it suspends accounts that violate authenticity rules. OpenAI had flagged similar China-linked content earlier this year.
Report Puts Improper ACA and Medicaid Enrollment at $65 Billion
Paragon Health Institute estimated taxpayers spent $65 billion in 2024 on Affordable Care Act Marketplace and Medicaid expansion coverage for people who did not qualify or did not exist. The Aug. 26 analysis put improper enrollment at 14.3 million, about 34 percent of those programs. Marketplace improper enrollment rose more than 26 percent in 2025, to an estimated 6.5 million. Covered California and insurers dispute systemic fraud. CMS said it has removed more than 1 million dual or unreconciled enrollees and 250,000 unauthorized sign-ups.
9th Circuit Lets Nevada Regulate Kalshi Sports Contracts as Gambling
A federal appeals court on Friday refused Kalshi’s bid to keep Nevada from regulating sports event contracts on its prediction market. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said those contracts are sports bets, not federally regulated swaps under the 1936 Commodity Exchange Act, so state gaming laws still apply. The Nevada Gaming Control Board called the ruling a vindication of state authority. Kalshi said it will seek further review. The decision conflicts with an April 3rd Circuit ruling that sided with the company in New Jersey and sends the turf fight to the Supreme Court.

Virginia AG Stands Up Permanent Unit to Sue Trump Administration
Democrat Attorney General Jay Jones announced a Federal Accountability Unit of four new lawyers led by Deputy Solicitor General Megan Keenan. Jones said the team will challenge tariffs, DOGE cuts, funding conditions, elections, immigration, and other federal actions he calls overreach. Virginia Senate Republicans said enforcing federal law is not overreach and that Jones has abandoned public safety. The Justice Department said it will defend the administration's policies. Jones took office in January after beating Republican Jason Miyares.

Colorado Democrat Challenging Bradley Was Booked in Texas Mid-Campaign
Christian Schilder, the Democratic nominee against Republican Rep. Brandi Bradley in Colorado House District 39, was booked in Brazos County, Texas, on May 8, 2026, on public intoxication and resisting arrest, search, or transport. Bonds were listed at $300 and $6,000. Video circulated by Douglas County Campaign Watch shows him in a WRAP restraint in a police van. An officer's account said he refused to walk, was carried to a patrol car, kicked the door, and was restrained. Schilder has acknowledged the intoxication arrest. He remains on the Nov. 3 ballot.
Appeals Court Drops Possession Charge for AI Images of Fictional Minors
The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed dismissal of a federal possession charge against Wisconsin defendant Steven Anderegg for AI-generated images that did not depict a real child. Judge John Lee cited 1969 and 2002 Supreme Court rulings on private possession of obscenity and virtual images. Lee said the court cannot redraw those lines even as AI now produces photorealistic fakes. Production, distribution, and alleged transfer to a minor remain pending.

Lula Lead Shrinks as Flavio Bolsonaro Closes Brazil Presidential Race
UBS’s Brazil poll aggregator shows President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at 44% of valid first-round votes and Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro at 38%, with a simulated runoff of 50.6% to 49.4%. The incumbent’s runoff edge fell to 1.2 points from 2.8 points earlier in the week. The first round is Oct. 4. Prediction markets still favor Lula. Bank notes cite fiscal strain and a possible rightward shift if the Bolsonaro ticket wins.
US Secures Majority Control of 65 Billion Barrels of Venezuelan Oil
The United States has secured majority control of more than 65 billion barrels of proven Venezuelan oil reserves through a private-business partnership overseen by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and War Secretary Pete Hegseth. The arrangement is described as costing American taxpayers nothing, more than doubling U.S. oil reserves, and adding a long-term source of crude that officials say will lower gasoline prices and ease pressure from OPEC and Canada. Interim Venezuelan President Delcy Rodriguez said the pact covers 17 strategic fields and is expected to draw more than $100 billion in investment and $209 billion in tax revenue for Caracas.
Russian Strike on Warehouse Near Kyiv Kills 37 After Detonations
A Russian drone struck a warehouse in the village of Myla in Ukraine’s Bucha district west of Kyiv late Friday, setting off explosions that killed at least 37 people. Regional officials reported damage to about 50 residential buildings and a care home for the elderly and disabled. More than 370 residents were evacuated, and 42 people were injured, including four children. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said storing ammunition near homes violated existing rules and that prosecutors opened a criminal negligence case. Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces hit a depot holding components and launch boosters for long-range drones.
Spanish Police Say Ceuta Rock Attack on Army Patrol Was Pre-Planned
Spain’s National Police say a rock attack on a military patrol in Ceuta’s Benzú district was a prepared ambush, not a chance clash. Investigators found a stockpile of heavy stones that did not match the local terrain and concluded that they had been placed in advance to target a passing vehicle. Troops from the 54th Regular Group were on a routine patrol when dozens of illegal migrants smashed an unarmored vehicle, trapping four soldiers who later said they feared for their lives and fled on foot. Twelve suspects were arrested. Military associations say soldiers were unarmed and barred from using force.

China Strips Two Top Generals From State Military Commission
China’s National People’s Congress Standing Committee on Friday removed Gen. Zhang Youxia and Gen. Liu Zhenli from the state Central Military Commission after probes for alleged serious violations of discipline and law. Zhang had been vice chairman of the commission and a Politburo member. The same session revoked National People’s Congress seats for Zhang, Liu, longtime Xi Jinping aide Zhong Shaojun, and Strategic Support Force commander Ju Qiansheng. State media gave no detailed charges. The state commission is now down to Xi and one remaining general.
