Democrats Weigh Rules to Stop Members From Voting Their Conscience
House Democrats convened Wednesday to consider changes to caucus rules after Reps. Jared Golden (D-ME) and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA) crossed party lines on a procedural vote that let Republican bills advance. Leadership treated the 210-208 vote as a breach of trust because minority members almost never back the majorityâs floor rule, even when they support the underlying bills. Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA) said the votes were a surprise. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said after a Committee on Caucus Rules meeting that no decision was made but that all options remain open, including changes that would constrain members from voting against the party line.

House Scraps Two September Weeks, Lengthening Midterm Campaign Break
House Republican leaders said Thursday that votes are not expected the weeks of Sept. 21 and Sept. 28, canceling two previously scheduled work weeks in Washington. Combined with the planned October recess, members now have about 6½ weeks in their districts before the Nov. 3 midterms, with the last scheduled voting day Sept. 17. The chamber already passed a stopgap funding bill to keep the government open through Dec. 11. Leaders left open a possible return with 48 hoursâ notice if the Senate adopts a budget resolution for another reconciliation bill. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) rejected the claim that the change was meant to dodge a vote on an Epstein files discharge petition.

Maryland Judge Blocks Trump Order Narrowing Birthright Citizenship
A Maryland federal judge issued a preliminary injunction blocking President Donald Trumpâs August executive order that sought to deny automatic U.S. citizenship to children born on American soil to members of terrorist organizations or parents who work for foreign governments. U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman, a Biden appointee, said the order is likely unconstitutional because its carve-outs bear little resemblance to the narrow exceptions the Supreme Court recognized in its June Barbara ruling. That decision held that the 14th Amendment grants citizenship to nearly every child born in the United States. Boardman wrote that the government cannot claim a legitimate interest in enforcing an executive order that is likely unconstitutional. Trump had argued that terrorists are akin to occupying enemy armies and foreign-government employees are akin to diplomats, the traditional exceptions to birthright citizenship.
House Passes Campus Boycott Funding Ban as Democrats Split on Israel
The House on Thursday passed the Protect Economic and Academic Freedom Act 237-169, which would bar federal student aid to colleges that join a commercial boycott of Israel and require Title VI schools to certify that students are not blocked from academic programs there. Thirty-three Democrats broke with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and voted yes. Jeffries and 166 other Democrats voted no, joined by Republicans Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Warren Davidson (R-OH). Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) co-led the measure with Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), saying BDS has no place on campus while Jewish students face threats. Most Democrats called the bill a First Amendment violation. Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) said he finds BDS morally repugnant but still opposed the measure. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (DS-MI) denounced it as an attack on speech and academic freedom.
Federal Judge Halts Virginia Bid to Void Existing ICE Partnerships
A George H.W. Bush-appointed federal judge in Richmond issued a preliminary injunction blocking Virginia from voiding existing 287(g) agreements between local law enforcement and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Senior U.S. District Judge Robert Payne found that the state law, signed by Gov. Abigail Spanberger, substantially impairs valid contracts and directly regulates federal immigration officers in violation of the Constitutionâs Contracts Clause and the intergovernmental immunity doctrine. The Justice Department sued after the measure required existing partnerships to be rewritten by Sept. 1 or declared unenforceable. Payne left the stateâs ban on new 287(g) deals in place for agencies that never had them. Attorney General Jay Jones said the commonwealth will appeal.
FBI Looks Into Dark Web Sale of Millions of License Scans
The FBI said Wednesday it is investigating a dark-web service that advertised digital scans of more than 150 million U.S. and Canadian driversâ licenses, including the license of an FBI assistant director. Independent journalist Brian Krebs first flagged the site, called Nexus, after it was promoted on a Russian cybercrime forum, which used his Virginia license as a free sample. Krebs said nine people confirmed the scans were authentic and that the sellers claimed the images came from an ongoing breach at a major identity-verification firm serving Fortune 500 clients. The site went offline after his report. The bureau declined further comment because the inquiry is open.

Judge Dismisses DOJ Suit Over California Girlsâ Sports Policy
A Biden-appointed U.S. district judge dismissed the Justice Departmentâs lawsuit against California for allowing males to compete in girlsâ school sports, finding the government failed to give the state clear notice that Title IX funding required eligibility based on biological sex. Judge Cynthia Valenzuela did not decide whether the policy is fair or whether California violated Title IX. The suit, filed in July 2025 against the California Department of Education and the California Interscholastic Federation, alleged discrimination against female athletes and a breach of Title IX funding assurances. A Justice Department spokesperson said the agency is disappointed and remains committed to keeping boys out of girlsâ sports while evaluating an appeal.

Columbia Student Facing Deportation Has Record of Terror Praise and Anti-Jewish Threats
A 100-page investigation by journalists David Collier and Rachel Feldman finds that Columbia University student Mohsen Mahdawi, a West Bank-born lawful permanent resident fighting deportation, has a years-long record of support for terrorists, armed violence, and anti-Jewish rhetoric. The report cites a 2010 Facebook post in which Mahdawi wrote that âsoon, very soon, we will annihilate the Jews,â a 2013 television interview in which he said Palestinians have âthe capacity and conviction to resist, to kill and to wound,â and praise for Hamas and dead terrorists. A 2015 Vermont police report states a gun shop owner told officers that Mahdawi claimed he had built modified submachine guns âto kill Jewsâ and later said, âI like to kill Jews,â remarks Mahdawi denied to the FBI. ICE detained him in April 2025 during a citizenship interview. An immigration judge ordered him removed to Jordan on June 3, 2026. The case remains on appeal.
US Rep. Khanna Distances Himself From Adviser Tied to Fang Fang Group
Rep. Ro Khannaâs (D-CA) office said Henry Yin never held a formal role with the congressman after reports that the Asian Pacific American Public Affairs national chair still lists himself as Khannaâs senior adviser. Khanna, ranking Democrat on the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, publicly named Yin his senior adviser on foreign trade and economic development in 2019. Yin, 79, has been linked to Chinese United Front organizations and appeared in party-controlled Sichuan media as an overseas Chinese leader in Silicon Valley. APAPA previously included Christine Fang, the suspected Chinese operative tied to former Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), as a chapter president. The group continues placing interns in U.S. political offices. Khannaâs spokeswoman called Yin a respected Fremont community member.

Oregon Teen Gets Probation After ICE Beheading Plot Plea
Rayden Tanner Coleman, 19, of Columbia City, Oregon, pleaded guilty Tuesday to two counts of unlawfully manufacturing a destructive device and received 36 months of supervised probation plus 75 days in jail with credit for time served. Prosecutors dismissed 13 other charges, including attempted first-degree and second-degree domestic terrorism. Court records said Coleman discussed stalking Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, killing them, taking their heads as trophies, building Molotov cocktails, and ordering an AR-style rifle while recruiting for a separatist group he called the Cascadia Rangers Coalition. Judge Michael T. Clarke ordered mental-health treatment, weapon surrender, and $550 in fines. Sen. Mike Lee called probation insufficient for terror plots.
Richardson, TX ISD Filter Blocks Student Search for President Trump
A Richardson Independent School District parent said her sonâs school-issued laptop blocked a search for President Donald Trump during a class assignment while searches for Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and Jeffrey Epstein were not blocked. Video provided to The Dallas Express showed a âWEBSITE BLOCKED BY RICHARDSON ISDâ message on the Trump query. The parent said the pattern looked like a keyword-specific restriction rather than a general political filter. The district, which serves more than 36,000 students under Superintendent Tabitha Branum, had not explained whether the block was a glitch, a leftover rule or an intentional setting.

US Officials Say Chinese Ships Conceal Spy Gear to Intercept Military Signals Off American Coasts
Chinese state-owned shipping giant COSCO uses concealed signals intelligence equipment aboard commercial vessels to collect military communications near U.S. and allied coastlines, two senior Trump administration officials said. The systems target military communications technology and encryption developments while tracking vessels, aircraft, and key maritime routes across North America, Europe, and Asia. Officials described a decades-long intelligence partnership between COSCO and Beijing. The Pentagon listed COSCO as a Chinese military company in January 2025. China called the claims baseless.

Iran Claims Missile and Drone Strikes on US Sites in Kuwait and UAE
Iranâs military said Thursday it launched missile and drone attacks on U.S. facilities at Ahmad al-Jaber Air Base in Kuwait and Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates, claiming hits on satellite communications systems, equipment depots, fighter hangars, troop positions and radar. Tehran cast the operation as retaliation for recent U.S. strikes inside Iran. Kuwaitâs army said it intercepted incoming missiles and drones and condemned what it called blatant Iranian aggression. Kuwaitâs Foreign Ministry called the attacks a flagrant violation of international law and a threat to civilians. The UAE has not confirmed a new strike. U.S. officials have not independently verified Iranâs damage claims.

Spaniards Pack Madrid Streets Against Sanchez Over Ceuta Border Surge
Tens of thousands of protesters filled Madridâs Plaza de Cibeles on Wednesday as rallies spread across Spain over the governmentâs handling of the July rush of about 72,000 migrants into the North African enclave of Ceuta. Crowd estimates in the capital ranged from 50,000, cited by the government delegation, to 150,000, according to city hall. Demonstrators waved Spanish flags and chanted âCeuta is not for sale, Ceuta must be defended,â âSĂĄnchez to prison,â and âInvaders, go home,â while one sign read âSOS. Europe, save us from our traitor government.â Popular Party leader Alberto Núùez FeijĂło and Vox leader Santiago Abascal attended the Madrid gathering. Prime Minister Pedro SĂĄnchez told lawmakers Thursday that no institution had provided Madrid with solid evidence that Morocco had planned the crossing. More than 10,000 migrants remain in the city of roughly 84,000, and at least 90 people died in the July surge.
France Adds Beach Surge Team Against Channel Mega-Dinghies
Britain and France announced a 45-officer surge team for beaches west of Calais to target mega-dinghy launches and cut off boat supply lines before they reach the coast. The unit will use drones and aerial intelligence and will be added to the nearly 1,050 French officers already assigned to stop Channel crossings. A new 75-officer unit is operating in northern France, and a specialist intelligence and judicial team tracking smuggling networks has grown from 18 to 30 officers. The moves were unveiled ahead of Prime Minister Andy Burnhamâs meeting with President Emmanuel Macron and follow a ÂŁ662 million three-year UK funding deal. Smugglers have shifted to packing record numbers of migrants onto fewer, larger inflatables even as overall summer crossings fell.
Dutch Central Bank Pulls 86 Tonnes of Gold From US Vaults
De Nederlandsche Bank said it shifted about 86 tonnes of gold from New York and Ottawa to London between March and August 2026, citing rising geopolitical unrest and the need for faster access in a severe crisis. The Netherlands holds 612.4 tonnes of gold, valued at 72.2 billion euros at the end of 2025. After the move, London holds 32.1 percent of the stock, up from 18.1 percent, while New York and Ottawa each hold 18.5 percent, and 30.8 percent remains in Zeist. About 59 tonnes were sold in New York and replaced with London Good Delivery gold. More than 27 tonnes were shipped to the Netherlands, and an equal amount of tradable bars was sent from Zeist to the Bank of England. Governor Olaf Sleijpen said the bank improved the tradability of its reserves and does not expect to use them, but wants them where they can be sold quickly if the financial weather turns ugly.
