NY Prosecutor Says James Office Ordered Hunt for Trump-Linked Crimes
Assistant Attorney General Daniel Wiesenfeld of New York Attorney General Letitia James’ Investor Protection Bureau sent an agency-wide email Friday claiming his supervisor instructed him to find and pursue crimes by Donald Trump, Truth Social, and Hewlett Packard without a credible reason. The message to more than 2,000 staffers was quickly deleted from office servers. Wiesenfeld wrote that colleagues should prosecute crimes rather than serve as James’ personal attorneys targeting political enemies, and he said the office spent taxpayer dollars on convenient public enemies while ignoring homeless shelter fraud and antisemitic crimes. James’ office placed Wiesenfeld on paid administrative leave and called the matter a personnel issue, saying it enforces the law regardless of political views.

Federal Sweep Closes 270 Truck Driving Schools Over Fraud and Safety Failures
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin announced Monday in Detroit an emergency shutdown of 110 commercial driving schools tied to more than 5,000 drivers later cited for English-language proficiency failures. Officials said an additional 160 schools are being removed for inadequate testing space, unlicensed instructors, missing records, and other violations of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules. Investigators reported that 40 percent of 400 schools examined failed to meet federal standards. Officials linked the schools to commercial licenses issued to illegal immigrants during the Biden administration and to crashes that killed motorists. The Justice Department and Homeland Security Investigations joined the effort with a same-day sweep of more than 200 training sites in 23 states.
Arizona Border Wall Project Launches in Remote Smuggling Corridor
The Trump administration started pre-construction work Aug. 25 on a 62-mile stretch of 30-foot steel bollard wall through southern Arizona desert on and near Tohono O’odham Nation land. U.S. Customs & Border Protection called the remote corridor one of the Southwest’s most dangerous routes for drug loads, migrant deaths and cartel traffic. A federal judge declined to block the project earlier in August. Contractors from SLSCO, backed by about 20 armed and masked CBP agents, entered the reservation at 4 a.m. to begin soil sampling despite tribal objections over sacred sites and trespass claims. The segment forms part of a $46.5 billion “smart wall” program that includes primary and secondary barriers, roads, cameras, and sensors. Officials plan to build 1,200 miles of new primary and secondary wall, plus vehicle barriers and technology, by 2028.
Trump Plans 2027 Federal Pay Freeze Except for Law Enforcement
President Trump proposed freezing base and locality pay for most civilian federal employees at 2026 levels in 2027, while giving federal law enforcement a 3.8 percent raise. He wrote Congress that the decision would maintain fiscal responsibility without harming recruitment and retention. It is the second consecutive year he has sought a freeze. American Federation of Government Employees President Everett Kelley said federal workers treat veterans, safeguard food and air, and process payments for tens of millions of Americans. Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said the freeze would reduce morale and retention. Congress can override the appropriations plan before December.
Three Men Sentenced in Feeding Our Future Child Nutrition Fraud
A Minnesota federal judge sentenced three men to a combined 155 months in prison for roles in the Feeding Our Future scheme that defrauded the Federal Child Nutrition Program during the COVID-19 pandemic. Abdihakim Ali Ahmed, 40, of Apple Valley, received a 54-month sentence for money laundering and wire fraud. Ahmed Abdullahi Ghedi, 35, of Minneapolis, received 65 months on similar charges. Ahmed Sharif Omar-Hashim, 43, of Minneapolis, received a 36-month sentence for wire fraud. Prosecutors said they submitted false meal counts and invoices at sites claiming to serve more than 1.6 million meals. Founder Aimee Bock was sentenced in May to 500 months. The scheme stole more than $240 million.

Three Dead, Dozens Wounded in Chicago Weekend Shootings With No Arrests
Chicago recorded more than 20 shootings from Friday evening through Sunday, leaving three people dead and at least 39 wounded, police said. Victims ranged in age from 15 to 73. All three deaths occurred on Saturday. A 15-year-old boy was shot in the chest on the 5200 block of West Augusta Boulevard. A 32-year-old man was killed at a gathering on East 37th Street. A mass shooting in Washington Park left a 35-year-old man dead and 14 others wounded as officers tried to disperse a crowd. No arrests have been made in any of the weekend shootings.

Whitehouse Says Democrats Would Target, Harass Supreme Court if They Win Senate
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) said at an Iowa steak fry that if Democrats win the Senate and he becomes Judiciary Committee chairman, he would immediately focus investigations on the Supreme Court’s conservative justices. Whitehouse said he and House Judiciary ranking member US Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) are already meeting monthly to plan, noting Republicans can filibuster Senate subpoenas but cannot block a House subpoena. He said not enough people know how the court was captured by right-wing billionaires and asked whether Justice Clarence Thomas paid taxes on a quarter-million-dollar loan forgiveness for a motor coach. Whitehouse also called for a proper ethics program with fact-finding powers and retroactive term limits. He was in Iowa campaigning for Senate nominee Josh Turek.
CAIR Pulls School Guide Linking 9/11 to U.S. Support for Israel
The Council on American-Islamic Relations published a back-to-school resource guide that linked a “Muslim Studies Curriculum” describing the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks as the work of a “group self-identifying as Al Qaeda” and attributing the plot in part to American support for Israel, the Persian Gulf War, and U.S. military presence in the Middle East. The materials recommended Osama bin Laden’s “Letter to America,” portrayed the post-attack period as “state-sponsored Islamophobia,” and were removed after the guide went live. A 9/11 family member said the account would teach children to blame the United States. Sen. Tom Cotton had previously warned the Education Department that CAIR materials for schools promote anti-Israel rhetoric and instruct teachers to avoid terms such as “Islamic terrorists.”

Trump Seeks FCC Rebuke of NBC Host Over Endorsement Record Remark
President Trump said Sunday he would report NBC “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker to the Federal Communications Commission for rebuke or punishment after she described his midterm endorsement record as having mixed results. Trump wrote on Truth Social that the comment was a purposeful inaccuracy on public airwaves and cited a 100 percent success rate in GOP Senate primaries and 98 percent in House primaries, pointing to recent wins by Darline Graham in South Carolina and Mike Mazzei in Oklahoma. Ballotpedia data cited in coverage showed Trump had made 313 endorsements with a 96 percent overall success rate, though several high-profile candidates he backed lost, including US Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) in Florida and Mike Lindell in Minnesota. An NBC spokesman said Welker is one of the best in the business, and the network stands by her. Trump also called on FCC Chairman Brendan Carr to treat the matter as a threat to the country.

US Attorney Says California Voter Rolls Rest on Honor System After Noncitizen Arrest
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said the arrest of Honduran national Darwin Jonathan Rivera Flores shows California voter rolls are vulnerable because the state lets people register on the honor system with no government check of citizenship. Rivera Flores, a lawful permanent resident in the San Fernando Valley, faces felony charges of false claim to U.S. citizenship and fraudulent voter registration after listing a driver’s license and Social Security number on a Nov. 4, 2025, form. He has not voted. Essayli said the Secretary of State reports that at least half a million people provide even less information when they register. Rivera Flores came to investigators’ attention after texting an ICE agent about midterms and qualified immunity following a February disruption of ICE operations. Essayli said he faces deportation if convicted and called the arrest the first of many.
NYC Teachers Union Fights Mayor It Backed Over Paraprofessional Bonus
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist who received the United Federation of Teachers’ endorsement, filed a lawsuit to block a City Council law giving education paraprofessionals a one-time $10,000 workforce stabilization payment. The Council passed the RESPECT Check Act unanimously in July, and it became law without the mayor’s signature. Mamdani argued the measure violates New York’s Taylor Law governing collective bargaining. UFT President Michael Mulgrew said the union filed a motion to intervene and that the law was drafted not to violate the Taylor Law. Mulgrew said the administration must keep its promises, and the union will not stop until it does. Mamdani had supported a version of the bonus during his campaign.

Aussie One Nation By-Election Upset Leaves Labor and Coalition Scrambling on Immigration
One Nation candidate Luke Herdegen won the Western Australian state by-election in Secret Harbour, taking a previously safe Labor seat with about 39 percent of the primary vote and a 57-43 two-candidate-preferred result after a swing of more than 18 percent against Labor. One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce said the result showed there were no safe Labor seats left, and that Australian politics had changed, while Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek was pressed on Sunrise over polling that put One Nation well ahead of Labor on immigration at 39 percent to 19 percent. Plibersek said the government had almost halved migration and was delivering tax cuts, wage growth and housing measures, but Joyce replied that voters no longer believed Labor’s claims. Radio host Ray Hadley said the Farrer and Secret Harbour results were a warning that both major parties had underestimated One Nation and that voters had grown tired of Labor and the Coalition.
Shin Bet Flies Yair Netanyahu Home After Threat on U.S. Soil
Israel’s Shin Bet said it urgently extracted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s son Yair from the United States after assessing a “significant threat” to his life. The 35-year-old had been living in the Miami area since 2023 with an Israeli security detail when the agency pulled him and his team back to Israel. Previous reporting placed the operation in December after intelligence indicated Iranian operatives were already watching his movements in South Florida. Netanyahu last week told Channel 14 that Iran tried to murder one of his sons. Shin Bet personnel assigned to President Isaac Herzog in New York were diverted to assist in completing the extraction.
Iran Hits US Bases in Jordan After American Strike on Larak Island Launchers
U.S. forces struck two Iranian missile launchers on Larak Island on Sunday after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was seen preparing to fire rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz. Iran then launched a combined missile and drone attack on U.S. forces at King Hussein and Muwaffaq Salti Air Bases in Jordan. A U.S. source told news outlets that nearly all incoming ballistic missiles were intercepted, with no significant impacts reported. Jordan’s military said air defenses intercepted eight missiles that entered its airspace. The IRGC claimed the operation, dubbed Punishment of the Aggressor, destroyed technical infrastructure and fighter deployment sites. The exchange marked the first flare-up between the two sides since late July.
EU Forces Board Sixth Russian Shadow Fleet Tanker After Putin Warning
EU Operation Irini forces boarded the tanker MV Sun in the Mediterranean on Sunday to verify its flag after suspicions that it was sailing under a false flag. The Italian navy ship Thaon di Revel intercepted the vessel west of Pantelleria as it traveled from Cotonou, Benin, to Istanbul. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said it was the sixth suspected Russian shadow fleet ship boarded in recent months and that illegal oil sales from such vessels are a critical lifeline for Russia’s war in Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin warned about two weeks earlier that Russia would respond in kind if European states seized Russian vessels and sold their cargo, calling the practice piracy and banditry. The latest EU sanctions package allows member states to sell oil or cargo seized from shadow fleet ships.
Turkish, Somali Forces Retake Hijacked Cargo Ship After 10-Day Fight
Turkish navy and Somali army forces freed the Cameroon-flagged cargo ship MV Lutuf after a 10-day operation off Puntland, Somalia. Somalia’s Defense Ministry said four pirate boats were destroyed and 14 pirates were killed. Sustained military pressure forced the remaining pirates to abandon the ship, which then resumed its journey. The vessel was hijacked on Aug. 17 off the Nugaal region. The operation was conducted under a Turkey-Somalia defense cooperation agreement. The ministry did not provide details on crew casualties. Reports said the crew included six Indian nationals, one Turkish national, one Georgian, and two Serbian security guards.
