A coalition of the National Action Network, the American Federation of Teachers, and the Save America Movement is launching Vote Safe to place hundreds of unarmed poll watchers at high-minority precincts in Detroit, Atlanta, Cleveland, and Charlotte. The groups say they will cover the 20 precincts in each city with the highest expected racial-minority turnout across Michigan, Ohio, Georgia, and North Carolina from early voting through the Nov. 3 midterms. Organizers claim President Trumpâs fraud warnings and possible ICE or federal presence amount to intimidation. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said agents are not assigned to patrol polling places but could appear to serve a warrant or respond to a threat. Volunteers, including clergy, veterans, and firefighters, will wear Vote Safe insignia and receive training in state election law and de-escalation. Rev. Al Sharpton said no voter should fear exercising the franchise.

US Foreign-Born Population Shrinks 2.9 Million in First Drop Since 1930s
A Center for Immigration Studies review of the Census Bureauâs Current Population Survey finds the U.S. foreign-born population fell from about 53.3 million in January 2025 to 50.5 million in July 2026. The analysis estimates the illegal immigrant population dropped by 2.3 million, from 15.8 million to 13.5 million, with another 600,000 decline among legal immigrants. The drop follows an 8.3 million rise in the foreign-born total during the prior four years. Latin American noncitizens who arrived in 1980 or later account for the entire decline. Researchers say the net change reflects new arrivals offset by removals, voluntary departures, legalizations, and deaths, and that only 44 percent of those who left were workers.
Kennedy Center Ceiling Chunk Drops After Storm as Officials Cite Years of Deferred Upkeep
A portion of the ceiling in the Kennedy Centerâs Grand Foyer fell around 5 p.m. Friday after severe storms hit Washington. Debris landed on the red carpet. No one was injured. The main building closed for the rest of Friday night. The foyer stayed closed through the weekend while crews assessed the damage. Officials said the rest of the building was slated to reopen Saturday. Vice President of Public Relations Roma Daravi called the failure another reason to shut the venue down for renovation and revitalization, a move championed by Chairman President Donald Trump. She said the collapse stemmed from decades of neglect and deferred maintenance by prior leadership. The drop occurred near the spot where Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-OH) had posed for photos two days earlier. Beatty has challenged the boardâs two-year closure plan in court. The Justice Department has described the building as dilapidated and in need of structural work, including repairs for water damage and rusting steel.

The unsigned order granted an emergency application from the National Republican Congressional Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee. The court said the appeals panel likely lacked jurisdiction because a review request was still pending at the Federal Communications Commission. The majority found the committees would suffer irreparable First Amendment harm if broadcasters kept rescinding the cheaper rates in the 60-day window before the midterms. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented.
Trump Signs Order Letting Ranchers Process Beef and Sell Across State Lines
President Trump signed an executive order Friday directing the Department of Agriculture to expand interstate market access so ranchers can slaughter, process, and sell their own livestock while maintaining federal food-safety standards. The order targets the four dominant meatpackers that control most U.S. meat processing and instructs USDA to accelerate state participation in the Cooperative Interstate Shipment Program, the Talmadge-Aiken program, and state inspection systems, as well as training and a loan program for small processors. Pentagon Polygraphs Dozens of Senior Officials in Hunt for Munitions Leakers
About 50 senior Joint Staff officers and civilian employees were given polygraph tests in August as investigators hunted the source of classified leaks about U.S. munitions stockpiles during the Iran war. The tests followed news reports that supplies of long-range missiles and Patriot interceptors were being drawn down. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said the department does not discuss internal investigations but takes leaks of classified national security information extremely seriously. CBS News reported that no one failed the questions designed to identify a leaker. President Donald Trump has called the disclosures treasonous, insisted the United States still holds massive munitions stocks, and said the leakers are being hunted for long prison terms.

Michigan Swing Seat Democrat Scrubs Posts Backing Police Abolition
Democrat nominee William Lawrence, a Sunrise Movement co-founder running in Michiganâs competitive 7th Congressional District against US Rep. Tom Barrett (R-MI), deleted hundreds of social media posts before launching his campaign. The posts, written under an earlier account, backed police and prison abolition, the âforced nationalizationâ of fossil-fuel companies, open migration, the abolition of the Senate, and a âfundamental overhaulâ of the Constitution. Other deleted messages called the nuclear-family home an âisolating, individualistic, violent way of organizing societyâ and included 2021 lyrics aimed at Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) that read âhurry up and die.â Lawrence, who said he let his Democratic Socialists of America membership lapse in July, now says he no longer supports defunding the police or open borders and that some past posts do not reflect his current views. Trump carried the district by about 2 points in 2024.

Gustavo Gordillo, co-chair of the New York City Democratic Socialists of America, described his parents as poor Peruvian immigrants whose first jobs were in fast food and house cleaning. A 2021 obituary for his paternal grandfather states that the elder Gordillo earned a medical degree in Lima and emigrated to the United States in 1958 as a medical resident before becoming a psychiatrist. Public records show Gordilloâs father founded a multimillion-dollar telecommunications firm in Miami and purchased a Brooklyn townhouse where the DSA official lives. Gordillo was terminated from an International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers apprenticeship after failing to complete required work and classes.
Journalist Rula Jebreal Draws Fire After Calling Jeffries an âAIPAC Monkeyâ
Palestinian journalist Rula Jebreal came under fire after calling House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) a âbought-and-paid-for AIPAC monkeyâ and an âerrand boyâ on Wajahat Aliâs âThe Left Hookâ podcast. Jebreal said she did not mean the remark âin a racist wayâ and later claimed she was invoking the three wise monkeys. ICE Arrests Three Guatemalans in Tennessee Over Stolen Social Security Numbers
Federal immigration officers arrested three Guatemalan nationals in Tennessee on Aug. 4 during an investigation into the fraudulent use of stolen identities and Social Security numbers. Magdalena Gomez-Garcia, Elias Gomez-Garcia, and Eulalia Ordonez-Carmelo all faced final orders of removal. Gomez-Garcia is accused of using a New York residentâs Social Security number to obtain work in Tennessee after the victim found unearned wages on her records. She was encountered by Border Patrol near San Luis, Arizona, in 2018 and ordered removed in absentia in April 2019. Elias Gomez-Garcia had traffic arrests in South Carolina and Kentucky and had been deported in 2009, 2011, and 2018. Ordonez-Carmelo illegally crossed near Texasâ Rio Grande Valley on March 13, 2022, was released on her own recognizance, and was ordered removed in February 2023. ICE New Orleans acting Field Office Director Scott Ladwig said fraudulent documents and stolen identities cause lasting harm to victims, workers, and businesses, and additional charges could follow.
UVU Student Leftists Plot to Make Kirk Memorial Uncomfortable
Left-wing groups at Utah Valley University, including Students for a Democratic Society, are organizing a Sept. 10 protest against a Turning Point USA memorial for Charlie Kirk at the UCCU Center. SDS president Collin Grannis said in a recording obtained by The Cougar Chronicle that protesters can only stand outside but will try to make it as uncomfortable as possible for people to get in. Fliers accuse UVU administrators of breaking neutrality by allowing the event and demand that Kirkâs views be kept off campus. The memorial will feature speakers including Glenn Beck, Frank Turek, and TPUSA field officer Andrew Sypher. Tyler Robinson, who confessed to shooting Kirk a year earlier on the same campus, faces trial and a possible death sentence.
