This Is Why Congress Has Lost The Trust Of The American People
The guilty verdict in the Contempt of Congress case against former Trump confidant Steve Bannon highlights the inequitable (to use a term favored by the radical Left) treatment of those by the US Department of Justice. On the one hand, Bannon faces jail time and a significant fine. On the other, Eric Holder didn’t even get a slap on the wrist.
Bannon, cited for contempt by the questionably sanctioned January 6th Committee, was selectively prosecuted by the Biden Department of Justice for refusing to testify before the committee. His conviction carries with it the possibility of up to one year in prison and up to a $100,000 fine for each charge. Sentencing is scheduled for October 21.
An Illegitimate Body
Tantamount to everyone on the Right side of the aisle and even some on the Left side of the aisle, have openly questioned the legitimacy of the January 6th Committee because the minority party in the House was denied its choice of who was to represent them on the committee.
Add to that the fact that those testifying before the committee are denied any cross-examination to their favor and we see the January 6th Committee as more of an over-glorified kangaroo court suitable to a Third World despotism than an investigative committee worthy of the Land of the Free.
To any discerning eye – anyone with an eye toward a fair quest for the truth, the Pelosi gerrymandered January 6th Committee is a farce and one to be condemned as an overt political exercise bordering on political persecution.
The Audacious Duplicity
But even more egregious in this event is the juxtaposition of the past to the present. This comparison in time reveals the purely partisan nature of a politicized Justice Department and the need for significant reforms (read: term limits) to be instituted for the upper management levels in the Executive Branch departments, agencies, and commissions.
In 2015, then-Attorney General Eric Holder was held in Contempt of Congress for refusing to deliver documents pertaining to the failed gun-running sting operation known as Fast and Furious. This covert and poorly thought-out operation that, in the end, did little but put high-powered weaponry into the hands of Mexican drug cartels, was run by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives under the authority of Holder’s Justice Department.
In the end, Holder was held in Criminal Contempt of Congress (like Bannon) and subsequently held in Civil Contempt of Congress. The civil contempt charge allowed Congress to go to court to seek additional documents.
But much different from Bannon’s situation, the Criminal Contempt of Congress charge against Holder, which was supposed to direct a US attorney to convene a grand jury in the case, never bore fruit because Holder had purview over the investigation. This presented a clear and egregious conflict of interest that should have seen Holder seat an Independent Counsel, which also didn’t happen.
Partisan Politics Proven Through History
So, for the first time since 1983 when Rita Levelle of the Environmental Protection Agency (a Republican appointee, by the by) was convicted of lying to the House Committee on Energy & Commerce, we see a jury decision to convict on a Contempt of Congress charge. Levelle was sentenced to six months in prison, five years probation, and levied a $10,000 fine.
In fact, dating back to 1975, no other individuals have ever been tried and sentenced for Contempt of Congress, just Lavelle and Bannon; not Holder, not the infamous IRS hitwoman Lois Lerner, not Janet Reno, not Hillary Clinton’s fall guy Bryan Pagliano, no one. Just two Republicans that the majority Democrats sought to target.
It would be one thing if Contempt of Congress charges were always referred to trial so that a jury could decide the fate of those held in contempt. But history bears out that this is hardly the case.
It would also be another matter if the January 6th Committee was a legitimate panel with bipartisan support. It is not. And as it continues on in its traveling political road show – one for which P.T. Barnum would be envious, this illegitimate committee proves itself nothing more than a taxpayer-funded political commercial for the far-Left Democrats up for re-election.
How Is This Not Political Persecution?
Democrats and their far-Left fascist party members vomit the disingenuous declaration that they are all for equity and justice but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
The truth is this. The current fascist-led Democrat Party in the United States has no qualms with executing political persecution ala the Castros in Cuba, Putin in Russia, or Xi in China. And unless we cut off their political testicles by executing a Convention of States to force them back into congruence with the US Constitution, the Republic is lost.
Just ask those being held on charges related to January 6th who have yet to be granted (by their benevolent overlords of the radical political Left) their constitutionally protected rights to due process and a speedy trial...
