A Short Explanation of Labor Day’s Genesis
Labor Day in the United States is rooted in the Marxist labor movement of the late 19th century.
It was established to recognize the contributions and achievements of American workers who were fighting for better working conditions, fair wages, and union rights.
The holiday has its origins in the struggles between labor unions and capitalists during the Industrial Revolution.
Marxists believed that the working class was being exploited by the capitalist system and that labor was the source of all value. They advocated for workers' rights and the eventual overthrow of capitalism.
While Labor Day has lost much of its radical political meaning over time and has become more of a general celebration of the end of summer, its Marxist origins, while forgotten by most, remain and are still evident in the focus on workers' rights and the recognition of labor's central role in society.
