If We’re Going To Push Back Let’s Start At The Beginning
The far-Left Woke agenda is being increasingly recognized by the overwhelming majority of people as something that is the exact opposite of freedom and opportunity for all, two of the core tenets on which our Republic was created. With a growing number of people fighting back, it may be time to prioritize how we go about dismantling the grip the woke have on our country.
First and foremost, I stand staunchly against squelching the voices of the Woke, misguided and radically obtuse as they are. There is a reason the protection of Freedom of Speech is the very first thing mentioned in the Bill of Rights. Without the freedom to express oneself; without Free Speech, there is no way there can be opportunity for all, no way there can be equality of freedom, for that matter.
Without Free Speech for all – not just for those aligned to a narrative preferred by the bully elites but for each and every person counted amongst the citizenry, we fall into a system that places the vocally dominant, the connected, and the privileged in the position to decide what is allowable speech and what is not.
In a Constitutional Republic, that kind of one-sided power cannot exist. Yet today, in the United States of America, it does. So, how does that allow us to be a free people? It doesn’t. We are not free. We exist under the illusion that we are free, as long as we bend a knee to the dominant Woke ideology being crammed down our throats.
The First Lost Battle We Didn’t Know We Lost
Back in the very late 1970s and early 1980s, the term “political correctness” popped up in the American lexicon. At first, it was considered a joke. In fact, there were novelty books published claiming to be guides on how to be politically correct. It was a joke.
But it wasn’t a joke. It was an introduction of today’s Woke ideology and agenda into the cultural mainstream in a non-assuming form; in a form that was non-threatening.
“Boy, that’s really funny, but damn if it isn’t politically incorrect,” wouldn’t be uncommon to hear in any public setting back then. But after a few years a caveat was added to that commonly used retort: “No, really, that’s politically incorrect.”
And all of a sudden, the thought police started to spring up everywhere, first concerned with only their feelings in the face of politically incorrect statements. That aggressive self-imposed authority to police language soon morphed into a perceived right to assume how others would feel or react to politically incorrect statements. And it spread like wildfire.
Lost in all of this was the right to Free Speech. Under the First Amendment to the Bill of Rights, a person gets to be politically incorrect if one chooses. In fact, nowhere in the whole of the Charters of Freedom – The Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, and the Bill of Rights – is there any guaranteed protection from any type of speech. There is no guarantee that you can go through life without being offended; no guarantee that your fragility must be the rubric by which society must function.
By allowing the bully mentality of political correctness to become more than a joke, we unwittingly bestowed the power to decide what can and can’t be said to an elite group of vocally dominant, connected, and privileged busy-bodies.
Assuming The Position Of Arbitor
With the ceding of the power to decide what can and can’t be said, we allowed for the easy redefinition of words and phrases. These redefinitions have become a favorite tool of oppression for the Woke legions. Eugenics? No, no, Planned Parenthood. Pedophile? Nope, that’s now a minor-attracted person or groomer, much softer-sounding terms.
And self-explanatory titles and phrases are now subject to Woke interpretation. Freedom fighters? Well, that depends on whether your cause is politically correct (in 2023 jargon: woke). If you are not on the anointed side of the preferred narrative those same freedom fighters are terrorists. Hell, if you are a White male coming out of the womb you are a terrorist if you listen to the radically misandrist.
Don’t buy into the unproven “settled science” (a very odd declaration seeing how science itself is the task of disproving theories and hypotheses) of man-made climate change? You’re a climate denier! Don’t believe that men can have babies? You’re a transphobe. Don’t believe in the pseudo-enlightenment of the globalists who want you to eat bugs, get the jab, cede your personal wealth to a Central Bank Digital Currency, or turn in your gas stoves to save humanity – a humanity that for the last 40 years has always been 12 years away from being destroyed? Well, you’re a White supremacist…even if you’re not White!
Lost in all of this incredible ridiculousness – and it is ridiculous – is the very real fact that by ceding the power to make the decisions about what can be said and what cannot, that power has morphed – just like political correctness morphed from being a joke to being serious – into policing what can be believed and what cannot be believed.
If you don’t believe according to the Woke edict then you are subject to being shunned, canceled, censored, and in the case of Armenian parents protesting the LGBTQ+ indoctrination of their children in the Glendale California school system, you are subject to acceptable violence.
Acceptable violence as viewed by the totalitarians of wokeness.
A group of unelected people who represent no one and who piss on the Bill of Rights when it doesn’t support their radical agenda is deciding – with no legal or moral authority to do so – what is acceptable and what is not; what can be said and believed and what can’t; whether you are a hater or whether you are a complacent cog in their oppressive totalitarian machine.
Hate Speech & Hate Crime Laws Are Anti-Freedom
Just as one person’s freedom fighter is another person’s terrorist, and one person’s groomer is another person’s grotesque pedophile sexual predator, one person’s hate speech is another person’s free speech. And the last time I looked at the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights (and I read them often) there was no definition or criteria to divine “hate” or “hate speech” or any exception for or protection from either.
Yet, today we have hate speech laws on the books that come with some stiff penalties. According to CriminalDefenseLawyer.com:
“Criminal penalties for hate crimes vary from state to state but many hate crimes are felonies (crimes punishable by more than one year in prison). States that allow penalty enhancements might increase the penalty by a certain number of years or raise the offense level—say from a misdemeanor to a felony or from a second-degree to a first-degree felony. Under federal hate crime legislation, bias-motivated violence is punishable by ten years to life in prison, and some bias-motivated crimes are punishable by the death penalty. (18 U.S.C. §§ 245, 249)...
“In 31 states and the District of Columbia, people who commit violence, intimidation, or vandalism against others on account of the person's race, religion, ethnicity, or membership in a protected group can be sued in civil court and ordered to pay damages (money) to the victim. Just as criminal hate crime laws vary from state to state, so do civil liability laws.”
So, with incarceration hanging in the balance where a person’s speech is concerned, a very important question arises. Who holds the authority to decide what is hateful and what is not? Obviously, because hate speech and hate crime laws exist, elected officials took it upon themselves to create legislation that holds a caveat to nullify the very first provision in the Bill of Rights, without even an attempt to amend the Constitution to that effect. One political party, fueled by self-righteous arrogance, hammered through legislation that stands in juxtaposition to our First Amendment guaranteed right to Free Speech.
Just like the radical Left’s – the Woke Left’s – foaming-at-the-mouth dedication to dismantling the Second Amendment right to self-protection and protection against any hijacked US federal government that seeks to turn our Republic away from freedom, the bullies of wokeness have usurped the Bill of Rights to install – unconstitutionally – censorship upon the Free Speech of all Americans, all under the guise of it “not being nice”; not being “politically correct”.
As for hate crimes? I ask you. Is murder ever a matter that doesn’t involve hate? Is one murder more egregious than any other because some agendized, arbitrary definition of “hate” was applied?
If We Are Going To Push Back Let’s Start Here
Now, I know this is going to raise the hairs on the necks of the indignantly Woke, and quite frankly I couldn’t care less.
If the radical Left – the Woke legions – weren’t so destructively hell-bent on removing our core values from the public square; if they weren’t so determined to sideline our Judeo-Christian values and the tenets of almost every major religion on the face of the planet – sans a scant few so they can install government as the Alpha and the Omega, then the teaching of the Golden Rule would be a more potent guide in our society: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
No one wants to be “hated” for what they say, what they believe, their skin color, their gender, or their sexual preferences; no one wants to be hated for who they are. And if society would hold true to the Golden Rule then there would be no need to cede the decision-making to anyone about the definition of hate or what is politically correct or not.
Free Speech is required – is required – if we are to have a free people in a free society. It is a requirement if we are going to achieve equal opportunity and liberty for all. Sadly, today we have none of that thanks to the busybody, elitists of the vocally dominant, the connected, and the privileged.
Do you want to actually do something to return our Republic to exist as a free state where we can continue on our path to “forming a more perfect union” each and every day? Then we have to expunge hate speech and hate crime laws to restore our guaranteed fundamental right to Free Speech. Only then can we start to laugh at the impotence of the Woke.
Oh, wait, did I just execute a “microaggression”? Tough…
