The Democratic Socialists of America and the far-Left brethren in the Democrat Party sell “equity” as moral progress. Look closer, however, and the pitch becomes a contemptible fraud: it swaps the American promise of equal opportunity for the socialist fantasy of equal outcomes.
Americanism says every citizen deserves a fair shot to rise or fall through talent, effort, and personal choices. Equity says the state should keep rearranging reality until every group lands in the same place, regardless of behavior, culture, or competence. That’s Marxism’s opening act, and history has already shown us the finale in blood, hunger, and ruin.
Equal opportunity is the bedrock of the American experiment. The Declaration of Independence says all men are created equal and endowed with unalienable rights. The Constitution and Bill of Rights promise equality before the law, not equality of result.
What does opportunity mean? It means the same rules for everyone: the freedom to work, invent, invest, and compete without the government dispensing favors or punishments based on identity. Success is earned, and failure remains possible. That system built the freest, most prosperous society in history because it rewarded excellence rather than punishing it.
DSA and Leftist equity rejects that foundation outright.
In the Democratic Socialists’ and Leftists’ vocabulary, equity requires actively redistributing power, wealth, and status until statistical gaps disappear. Any gap between groups becomes evidence of oppression, not a possible reflection of differences in family structure, cognitive distribution, work ethic, or crime rates. The prescribed remedy is discrimination in reverse: racial preferences in admissions and hiring, wealth transfers, speech codes, and bureaucratic supervision of private life.
Once outcomes are mandated, opportunity no longer matters. Merit becomes a dirty word, while individual agency is dismissed as a myth that protects the privileged. This isn’t a modest appeal for fairness. It’s a direct assault on the principle that people are responsible for their own lives.
History tells us where enforced equality of outcome can lead:
The Bolsheviks promised equality after the 1917 revolution, then seized land, factories, and grain. What followed was the Red Terror and engineered famine in Ukraine. By the Soviet collapse, this equality of misery had killed tens of millions.
Mao’s China followed the same script. The Great Leap Forward forced farmers into communes in the name of egalitarian production, and famine killed tens of millions. The Cultural Revolution then turned the young against the educated and successful, destroying human capital in the name of leveling.
Venezuela, once South America’s richest country, nationalized industries, expanded welfare, and imposed price controls under the banner of equity. Within a generation, hyperinflation, mass emigration, and empty shelves followed.
In each case, equal results demanded a state powerful enough to override individual choice, private property, and reality itself. Power like that never stays democratic.
DSA and Leftist officials and candidates wave away these precedents as irrelevant or as betrayals of “true” socialism. They insist their version will be gentler because it arrives through elections instead of revolution. That distinction is cosmetic.
Once equal outcomes become the goal, the state must constantly monitor and correct every disparity. That means ever-larger bureaucracies, tighter speech restrictions, and more property seizures. Democratic mechanisms do not restrain the logic; they accelerate it when voters are promised other people’s money and status.
The DSA’s platform calls for public ownership of industries, the abolition of prisons as currently constituted, and the subordination of markets to political goals. Those aren’t incremental reforms, as these ideological charlatans couch them. They’re the institutional framework of failed command economies.
What’s contemptible is the refusal to admit trade-offs.
Equity activists celebrate dismantling selective high schools, lowering standards in medicine and aviation, and racializing every metric, all while pretending only the already successful will bear the cost. But crime rates, academic achievement, and labor-force participation differ among groups for reasons policy can’t erase without coercion. Denying those differences creates worse outcomes for the very people equity supposedly helps:
The Soviet peasant did not grow richer when the kulak was liquidated.
The Venezuelan worker did not prosper when the state seized private enterprise.
And American cities experimenting with equity-driven policing and education have seen test scores fall while homicide rises.
The costs are not theoretical; ordinary people pay them.
Americanism offers a better path. Equal opportunity can’t guarantee equal results because people are not interchangeable. It guarantees that no one is barred from trying and that the state doesn’t punish success to manufacture parity. That arrangement has lifted more people out of poverty than every equity scheme combined has attempted across the annals of time.
The DSA’s alternative is a stepping stone because it conditions citizens to accept that government may redefine justice as statistical sameness and use force to impose it. Grant that premise, and Marxism stops looking like a distant threat. It becomes the next logical demand, which explains why the 18-to-26 demographic—uneducated in the horrors of history—is gravitating toward the false promise of socialism.
Reversing this ideological cancer will prove to be harder.
The choice isn’t between compassion and indifference. It’s between a proven system and a doctrine that has repeatedly produced tyranny and death.
Equity isn’t progress. It’s the recycled slogan of regimes that promised equality and delivered graves.
We can stop that—if only in our time—by showing up at the polls and voting to excommunicate the democratic socialism of the Left from our Republic’s political lexicon.
