The failure of Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI), to move the American Health Care Act (AHCA) to a successful vote in the House is embarrassing. Whether or not there were overreaches and flaws in the legislation is almost irrelevant. With seven years to craft an acceptable piece of legislation that would have everyone sign on, there is no excuse - no excuse - for what the nation just witnessed.
First, unless you do your own taxes there are new forms that have to be filed to satisfy proof of health insurance coverage. If you go to Jackson-Hewitt or H&R Block, these extra forms are going to cost you, and not just a little bit.
Second, the requirement to have health insurance is still on the books and that means the fines are still on the books. Little has been done to quell the uneasiness of the people in the vague language of Donald Trump's executive order to the IRS not to exact penalties for non-compliance. So, may who do not have health insurance will necessarily pay the fines to stay on the right side of the law.
Congress needs to repeal Obamacare directly and make it retroactive to 2015, so that the American people are covered - legally - against this unconstitutional law. Argue about fixing things later, but the American people need relief from it now!
President Trump needs to have a prime time presidential address to the nation from the Oval Office telling the people that he is directing the Treasury Department (read: the IRS) to completely cease enforcement of the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) under penalties that would hold each employee accountable should they violate the order.
He then needs to tell the American people - directly - that they will not be penalized for not complying with the ACA, and that they will not be in violation of the law. If former Pres. Obama can selectively enforce laws - as he did incessantly during his tenure - then what id good for the goose...
These actions must - must - be taken otherwise the Middle Class will get rocked next month. After everything we delivered to the GOP they owe us at least this much.
