Sen. John McCain (P-AZ), said that suppressing freedom of the press is "how dictators get started" in response to a tweet from President Trump that called the media "the enemy of the American people." McCain, on NBC's Meet the Press, said that having a free press is "a fundamental part of the new world order" when responding to a question about Pres. Trump's tweet that specifically calls out the New York Times, NBC and CNN as "fake news media."
McCain said, "If you want to preserve democracy as we know it, you have to have a free and sometimes adversarial press. Without it, I'm afraid that we would lose so much of our individual liberties over time. That's how dictators get started."
While McCain is correct about dictators stifling and controlling information sources, his application of that idea to Pres. Trump is laughable. Labeling the media - or, more specifically, the elitist media outlets - as enemies of the American people isn't that far of a stretch.
The elite media is, without doubt, politicized and that makes them less the arbiters of truth and more the minions of ideology. This state removes their designation as entities of truth to power and makes them activists.
Perhaps the most potent validation of this comes in their screeching defense of themselves. Instead of being introspective of why the people have come to despise them more than lawyers and politicians - instead of looking inward to correct their wicked ways - they are defending the very behavior that moved people to distrust them in the first place, claiming that We the People are the ones not in sync with reality.
Trump is not lambasting all media, he is lambasting the Progressive controlled elite media, so no, he is not attempting to control information like a despot. Trump is taking it to the media...and just maybe, the media deserves it.
As for McCain...it is time for him - and his buddy Lindsay Graham - to go.
