Students at the University of Chicago are objecting to the school's Institute of Politics' invitation to former Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, saying free speech should not apply equally to everyone. They claim that allowing him to speak "normalizes bigotry" and provides a platform for fascism. The coalition of students claim that the school's "commitment to free expression" doesn't require the institution to host him due to his alleged ties to white supremacists and similarly alleged calls to violence against minority groups and refugees.
Of course, the usual suspect radical Leftists - like the groups from UofC Resists, Students Working Against Prisons, and UChicago Socialists - were integral in the objection.
To borrow from the sentiment of Voltaire - "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" - free speech cannot be a one-way street or a filtered commodity. Free speech must be truly free. This is why "hate speech" laws are completely antithetical to liberty and freedom in every form. It is a morally relativistic cop-out that allows societies to be lazy.
Shielding those who are supposed to be honing critical thinking skills from any type of speech is to deny a full and potent path to attaining those said critical thinking skills. Then, Socialists, oligarchs and one-worlders believe they are above it all and know better than you and I what is hateful and what is culturally acceptable.
Political correctness is for cowards and pansies...)did I say that in my outside voice?)
