Seattle Shooting Victim Walked Two Blocks After Street Takeover Gunfire

Matthew Lanske, 21, was shot three times early Sunday near Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood after he and friends encountered a street takeover. His family said a man and two women tried to rob a friend at gunpoint. Lanske tried to grab the gun and was hit twice in the stomach. A third round shattered his pelvis and struck an artery. These scenes aren’t isolated outbursts. They’re the domestic face of a larger campaign that treats Western mourning as an opportunity and Western law as optional.

Again, that same week, Iran’s president stood in New Delhi at a BRICS gathering and announced that Tehran would not surrender to the United States. Houthi forces, Iran’s clients, tightened their grip on Yemen’s Red Sea coast, struck toward Saudi oil infrastructure, and advanced to within twenty miles of the U.S. base in Djibouti. Oil routes, shipping lanes, and an American installation now sit inside the same ideological radius as the flag on the Yankee Stadium grass.

The protesters at home and the militias abroad are not separate stories. They reflect the same posture: the West must yield, apologize, and forget.

Pro-Islamist protesters, apologists, and lobbyists sell a comforting story. Islamist culture, they say, is peaceful; violence is either a misunderstanding or a reaction to “occupation.” History tells a different story: conquest, dhimmitude, jihad as obligation, and a long record of treating unbelievers as a problem to be managed or eliminated.

When that record becomes inconvenient, the tactic is taqiyya—permitted deception in defense of the faith. Soft language about “Islamophobia” and “Islam is peace” isn’t theology. It’s strategy. It buys time and moral cover while Sharia norms are carried into institutions that were never designed to host a rival legal order.

Islam isn’t only a private faith. By the Quran’s own political claims, it presents a complete system that places divine law above man-made constitutions. Sharia isn’t limited to personal rituals. It makes claims about speech, apostasy, the status of women, the treatment of Jews and Christians, and the legitimacy of secular government. Those claims are difficult to reconcile with the U.S. Constitution or with any free Western charter that places sovereignty in the people and protects the rights of the individual. Pretending otherwise is not tolerance. It is willful blindness.

I don’t judge anyone by the group they were born into. The Left can’t say the same; identity is its entire politics. Individuals vary. Many Muslims want quiet lives, jobs, and distance from zealots. That fact doesn’t dissolve the doctrine.

Peaceful Muslims must take the lead in separating the quiet from the violent inside their own theocratic inheritance. That requires something far harder than interfaith dinners. It requires abandoning the dogma that Quranic authority is supreme and beyond question. It requires an Enlightenment-level shift toward reason, individual rights, and the freedom to leave the faith without fear of death.

Until that break happens, the political project of Islam will remain hard to square with any society that refuses to place scripture above its constitution.

Lobbyists and campus organizers will call this bigotry. They always do. They won’t explain why a 9/11 memorial is fair game for “Free Palestine,” why a ballpark ceremony is a stage for a foreign flag at the exact minute the World Trade Center towers fell, or why Iranian proxies can close in on an American base while Western commentators still lecture us about root causes.

Annoyance is the honest response. Exhaustion is earned. A civilization that ca’t name a rival political theology when it runs onto the field, defaces flags honoring the dead, and sits twenty miles from a U.S. garrison is not being kind. It is being played.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) said Sunday he will run again in the February 2027 election. The session is billed as tracing the “forever wars.”

Dallas Democrats Draw Anemic Crowd Against Packed GOP Midterm Convention

Democrats staged counter-events on Thursday in Dallas while Republicans held their first midterm convention at the American Airlines Center, where President Trump and Vice President JD Vance spoke. One on-the-ground account put Democrat turnout at about 100 to 120 people. Texas House Democrats held a “People’s Hearing.” An afternoon march started at Pike Park. Intelligence points to work at several locations, including the Khojir plant. Tehran is also building new underground facilities. Output remains below prewar levels after U.S. and Israeli strikes and a naval blockade. Iran this week fired missiles at a Jordanian base used by U.S. troops. The Pentagon said U.S. forces had degraded up to 90 percent of Iran’s missile industrial base.

G20 Isolates China Over Export Surplus and Cheap Goods Flood

China was the only member to dissent. Even Russia signed. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said non-market economies pushing a stream of cheap exports is not sustainable. Prosecutors said the enterprise operated from October 2023 through at least May 2025, used social engineering and occasional home break-ins, and grew out of contacts on online gaming platforms. Lam, who used aliases such as Anne Hathaway and King Greavy, organized targets and assigned roles. Stolen funds paid for nightclub tabs up to $500,000 a night, luxury watches, rental homes, private jets, and cars worth as much as $3.8 million. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said the network preyed on victims through deception. A status hearing is set for Dec. 8.

British Commons Rejects Assisted Dying Bill After Five-Hour Debate

The House of Commons rejected the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill on Friday by 286 votes to 270, ending the latest attempt to legalize assisted dying in England and Wales. The private member’s bill, reintroduced by Labour MP Lauren Edwards after a similar measure stalled in the Lords, would have allowed terminally ill adults with six months or less to live to seek medical help to end their lives after approval by two doctors and an expert panel. Opponents cited inadequate safeguards, the risk of coercing vulnerable people, and the need to address patchy palliative care first. Prime Minister Andy Burnham abstained. Census Bureau Proposes Dropping Illegal Aliens and Temporary Visa Holders From the 2030 Count

The Census Bureau posted a Federal Register proposal Wednesday to count only citizens and lawful permanent residents for the 2030 House apportionment. Illegal immigrants and aliens with less durable status than a green card would be left out for lacking a sufficient tie and allegiance. President Trump said nearly 1 million Affordable Care Act enrollees who pay full price on the federal exchange will get $500 refunds from surplus user fees. Checks start in October, before the Nov. 3 midterms. The White House put the pot, left over from Biden-era collections, at about $500 million, which officials said sat unused. Eligibility covers 30 Healthcare.gov states, including Florida, Ohio, Texas, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Recipients who already get premium subsidies are out. Trump framed the cash as money that should go to people, not insurers, and tied it to his Great Healthcare Plan. Biden officials once floated the same surplus for free contraception and dropped it after GOP pushback.

US Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) appeared by video Wednesday at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas. Filmed on a roof overlooking a steel mill, he called himself a common-sense Democrat who stands with America and rejects “extremes and socialism.” He introduced Republican colleague US Sen. Dave McCormick (R-PA) as a friend who gets the job done. Fetterman said he would work with McCormick and President Trump to defend the Steel Valley. McCormick asked the crowd how great Fetterman is. Fetterman later said he is a lifelong Democrat who still votes with his party and would remain the 51st vote if the Senate flips. He and McCormick run a joint fundraising committee. A Siena poll found 73% of Pennsylvania Republicans view Fetterman favorably.

FBI agents arrested James Brass, 47, known as Lord, in Victorville before dawn Thursday after he left home at 4:45 a.m. Prosecutors say his firm, Pinnacle Brass, paid Skid Row residents a few dollars to sign ballot petitions in the names of real California voters pulled from a database. Circulators Courtney Price, 49, of Jacksonville, Florida, and Jateisha Herron, 33, of Boron, face conspiracy charges with him. Brass was paid about $41,600. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said the scheme undercuts voter confidence. O’Keefe’s video earlier showed lists of names and $2-to-$3 payouts. DOJ Says Berkeley Law Gave Black Applicants Nearly Six Times White Odds After SFFA

The Justice and Education Departments said Wednesday that Berkeley Law violated Title VI by discriminating against White and Asian applicants in 2024 and 2025 classes. Investigators found that Black applicants had 5.8 times the odds of comparable White applicants in 2025. Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis took the Red Sea port of Mocha on Thursday, four government military sources said. Control of Dhubab and Perim would give them the Gate of Tears, the southern Red Sea chokepoint for Gulf oil heading to Suez. Iran has already squeezed Hormuz. Declassified files released Wednesday show Spain’s National Intelligence Center warned officials on July 29 of social-media calls to storm the Ceuta fence and swim in at 8 p.m. the next day. Two groups had 180,000 followers. CNI sent the same alert to the Civil Guard and to Moroccan intelligence, noting Throne Day. More than 72,000 people then crossed July 30-31. William Lawrence, the Democrat nominee in Michigan’s toss-up 7th District, said on an October 2024 Hegemonicon podcast that the left needed a framework for “a world without borders” and to “redistribute all the land and all the money.” He called inequality the result of “violence and evil deeds” and spoke of throwing open the gates to climate migrants. Michigan Lawmaker Who Quit Democrats Tells Black Voters to Reject El-Sayed

State Rep. Karen Whitsett, who left the Democrat Party in March, told reporters that socialist politicians are “more racist than the KKK” and urged Black voters not to back Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed. Cal State Los Angeles pan-African studies professor Melina Abdullah named ICE agent Brian Palacios at the La Defensa del Pueblo Summit on Sunday and said he might be staying at a nearby Hilton Garden Inn. Residents reported internet slowdowns and VPN outages. Officials cited the “current situation” and said extra revenue would go to households. Twenty-five years later, the towers are gone, the Pentagon scarred and repaired, and a quiet field in Pennsylvania still holds the imprint of Flight 93. What remains is the duty to tell the truth about that morning so that those who never lived it can feel, even faintly, what the country felt when the sky itself became a weapon.

Every year, this is the hardest article for me to write. As I contemplate how to keep that memory alive—of the intense hurt and rage, the intense feeling of vulnerability—I am astounded that anyone should even have to. Yet, there are people today who were alive to witness those acts of mass murder, who are attempting to soft-pedal the events of that day. They are despicable and ugly; monsters of the Hitleresque kind, aiding and abetting a murderous culture that slaughtered 2,977 people on that fateful morning.

If you weren’t alive that day, try this: imagine every student in your high school—freshmen through seniors—plus every teacher, coach, secretary, custodian, and principal, erased in two hours. Not scattered. Not missing. Consumed in fireballs and then crushed under a collapsing mountain of steel and concrete, leaving only a crater and a pile of rubble that consumed those who once had names. That is the scale. Nearly three thousand people died. They were office workers, travelers, soldiers, cooks, traders, and first responders. They had families who waited for calls that never came. The nation watched it happen in real time, then watched the buildings fall, and understood that the world had changed in the space of a morning...forever.

The men who did it didn’t hide their purpose. Nineteen hijackers, acting for al-Qaeda, murdered in the name of their god. Their leaders had already published the reasons. Osama bin Laden’s 1996 and 1998 declarations of war—his fatwas—against America weren’t metaphors. They were religious and political documents that named the United States an enemy of Islam and called for the killing of Americans, civilian and military, wherever they could be found. The hijackers left letters and last testaments steeped in the same language of martyrdom and paradise.

After the attacks, some crowds celebrated, literally dancing in the streets and on rooftops. Some clerics and governments issued condemnations of convenience while the ideology that produced the killers continued to circulate.

Those who insist Islam is a “religion of peace” must still account for the words spoken before, during, and after the slaughter. They must account for a long history of expansion through violent conquest. And they must account for the fact that organized terrorism in the name of that faith didn’t begin on September 11 and didn’t end that afternoon.

Equally false is the claim, now common in some classrooms and political circles, that America somehow invited the massacre. That argument treats the dead as collateral in a morality play about American foreign policy. It’s an insult to the families who lived through the terror and to those who buried sons, daughters, husbands, wives, and parents. It’s a special insult to the families of the firefighters, police officers, and emergency workers who climbed into the towers while everyone else was trying to get out. Those men and women didn’t die because of some abstract American sin. They died because nineteen murderers chose mass slaughter as worship. Softening that fact or shifting the blame is a lie told to the living and a second injury to the dead.

I write this as a retired firefighter and paramedic. I know what it means to run toward smoke, fire, and danger when every instinct says run away. On that day, hundreds of first responders did exactly that. Citizens did it too—people on Flight 93 who understood what was happening and forced the plane into the ground rather than let it reach its target; office workers who stayed behind to help a stranger down the stairs; ordinary men and women who became extraordinary because the moment demanded it. Their courage isn’t a footnote. It’s the answer the country gave when the buildings fell.

Remember the names if you can. Remember the pictures of the jumpers, the dust-covered survivors, the flag raised in the wreckage. Remember that the attackers weren’t “militants” in some vague sense. They were jihadists who believed they were fulfilling a sacred duty. Remember the culture that formed them, praised them, and in too many places still excuses or romanticizes the same impulse. Forgetting any of that—or choosing to rewrite that history—doesn’t make us more generous. It makes it easier for us to be attacked again.

The proper response isn’t hatred of a people. It is to seek clarity about the acts, those who committed the acts, and those who support and make excuses for them. It is to seek clarity about the ideology that birthed those who consider—and considered—those acts as piety. It is a duty to be honest about the events of that day, first and foremost.

The dead of September 11 cannot speak. The living still can. Tell the story straight. Don’t let it be rewritten into something smaller, safer, or less true.

The crater is still there in memory. So are the bravery and the truth. Let’s keep all three.

Mamdani posted in 2023 that “the death hasn’t stopped” and mourned “hundreds of thousands who died in the wars that followed.” Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed’s deleted 2021 tweet mourned 3,000 dead in New York, then “~1M lives” overseas “perpetuated ignorantly in the name of my country.” Streamer Hasan Piker, who has campaigned with El-Sayed, said in 2019, “America deserved 9/11.” Colorado primary winner Melat Kiros called the attacks “inevitable.” Rep. Tom Suozzi, whose Queens and Long Island district lost hundreds on Sept. 11, wrote that Democrats will not earn public confidence in the DSA platform. Crowther’s mother, Alison, and sister, Paige, accepted the nation’s highest civilian honor at the Tunnel to Towers Steel Across America event on the Ellipse, days before the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Crowther worked on the 104th floor of the South Tower and, after United Airlines Flight 175 struck the building, used a childhood red bandana to cover his face as he found a usable stairwell and made repeated trips from the 78th-floor sky lobby to lead trapped survivors to safety. Survivors later credited him with saving as many as 18 people. He was last seen with firefighters and died when the tower collapsed. Trump recounted the rescues and said the medal also honored other unnamed acts of heroism that day.

UCSB Professor Urges Marxism Crowd to Train With Weapons and Destroy Democrats

University of California, Santa Barbara history professor Butch Ware told a Chicago Marxism conference Sept. 4-5 that Democrats “must be destroyed” and that attendees should get ready for “war in the streets.” Ware said figures such as New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed exist only to contain radicalism. Illegal Immigrant Fleeing ICE Hits Tesla Carrying New Jersey Democrat Mayor’s Wife

Chicago’s Labor Day weekend delivered the same sickening product it always does under Brandon Johnson and the Lightfoot machine that came before him: corpses, wounded teenagers, and a City Hall that treats mass shootings like a branding problem. By Monday morning, official tallies showed six dead and 17 wounded since Friday evening. Those numbers don’t even cover the whole holiday weekend. They never do. Officials rush to the microphone before the last body is identified so they can brag about it being a “historically peaceful” summer while families are still waiting in emergency rooms. To say it illustrates an unprecedented level of contempt for the citizens of Chicago would be an understatement.

Johnson and Lightfoot have spent years dressing up failure as compassion. The administration crows that June through August produced 122 murders—the lowest summer total since 1965—and that last year’s violence dropped from the post-2020 catastrophe. Fine. The drop is real. It’s also nowhere near good enough. A city that still stacks up six homicides and nearly two dozen shooting victims in part of a holiday weekend is not turning a corner. It is managing a slaughter and calling the slightly smaller pile of bodies a victory.

Black neighborhood leaders have had enough. Some have asked President Trump to send the National Guard. Others say they would vote Republican for mayor for the first time since William Hale “Big Bill” Thompson’s last term began in 1927. When the people living in the kill zones start begging for federal troops and a GOP mayor, the experiment is over. The far-Left project has failed them in blood.

Walk the streets on any given weekend and the policy is obvious: near non-policing of the crimes that terrorize working people. Teen takeovers—social-media mobs that seize intersections, spin cars, jump hoods, and often end in gunfire—roll on with barely a slap. Residents documented multiple Labor Day takeovers on the South Side, including a ring of fire near Lake Shore Drive. Officers arrive late or not at all.

Carjackings and smash-and-grabs follow the same script. Predators move fast. The city lectures. Lightfoot taught the Chicago Police Department that aggressive enforcement would be punished. Johnson, a Chicago Teachers Union organizer installed by that same union, kept the doctrine: root causes, violence interrupters, listening sessions. Meanwhile, the kids who can’t read are organizing the next takeover and the next carjacking.

Los Angeles, the supposed belly of the beast of progressive liberalism, finally decided the farce had gone far enough. Early this month, a coordinated operation smashed a South LA takeover with more than 150 officers, drones, and partner agencies. Sixty-nine arrests. Five hundred seventy citations. More than 200 vehicles impounded. One hundred twenty-eight juveniles cited for curfew. Seven guns seized. The police chief said it was “only the beginning.”

Meanwhile, Chicago still kneels at the altar of victimhood wokeism and pretends these takeovers are misunderstood youth culture.

One city is reclaiming its streets. The other is writing press releases while another 15-year-old takes a round in the back of the head, only to end up in a cold drawer in the morgue.

A lion’s share of the blame for this—both governmental and societal—belongs to the Chicago Teachers Union. The CTU has owned the fifth floor for decades. Johnson is not an independent mayor. He is the union’s delivery system.

Chicago Teachers Union members’ pay climbs. Student proficiency collapses. Dozens of schools report 0% math proficiency. Reading scores are a disgrace. Chronic absenteeism sits near 40%. The union’s answer is always the same: more “community schools,” more politics, more ransom notes to Springfield. It’s extortion under the banner of social justice.

The union doesn’t exist to teach children. It exists to keep power, protect dues, and produce the next generation of both victims and offenders. Until that grip is broken, Chicago will keep manufacturing illiteracy and then act shocked when those same kids take over an intersection at midnight, guns blazing.

This isn’t complicated.

Lightfoot presided over the 2020 implosion and never rebuilt the will to enforce the law. Johnson arrived promising a kinder, woke alternative to “over-policing” and delivered the same funerals in the same neighborhoods to the same families. Officials celebrate percentage drops while mothers bury sons and daughters.

A slightly lower body count is not public safety. It’s a talking point for people who don’t live where the shots are fired. When community leaders in those neighborhoods say they want the Guard and a Republican mayor, they aren’t reciting conservative talking points. They are describing the wreckage.

Chicago was a great American city. It won’t be one again while far-Left policy treats lawlessness as a grievance instead of a crime. The incomplete Labor Day body count is the point. It’s what you get when ideology outranks order. Teen takeovers will continue until someone ends them the way Los Angeles just did—with impoundments, citations, and cuffs instead of workshops. Carjackings and smash-and-grabs will continue until the people who commit them expect to be hunted. Schools will keep failing until the union that runs them is thrown out of City Hall.

Fence off the CTU. Eject the woke-Left faction that has run this city into the ground. Take education seriously instead of using children as political props. Until that happens, the Windy City will keep dying one holiday weekend at a time.

The numbers from this Labor Day are incomplete. The indictment of Johnson, Lightfoot, and the policies that produced them is not.

Gugava allegedly opened company bank accounts as the sole signatory, deposited reimbursement checks, and moved the money overseas for a Russia-based criminal network tied to Operation Gold Rush, which the Justice Department calls the largest health care fraud case it has ever prosecuted. Stolen identities of elderly and disabled Americans were used to justify the billings. Gugava fled the United States in July 2025 and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Quite a few years ago, I co-wrote a book about the serial murderer on Long Island, Joel Rifkin, who savagely murdered 17 young women without an ounce of remorse––earning him the grim distinction of being the most prolific serial killer in New York’s history.

At his lengthy and fascinating trial, which my co-author and I attended every day––along with the grieving mothers, fathers, siblings, children, and other relatives and friends of the victims––Rifkin’s defense team tried to make the case that the vicious crimes he committed were a function of insanity.

But when the famed forensic psychiatrist, Park Dietz, took the stand, he shredded that theory so persuasively that Rifkin was ultimately convicted of all his crimes and sentenced to life in prison, where he deservedly remains today.

Other American serial murderers also tried the insanity defense , but most juries didn’t buy it. In many cases, there was too much premeditation, careful planning, and higher cognitive functioning at work for juries to believe that mental illness or just plain craziness was a factor.

But every now and then, there is genuine insanity when the person in question demonstrates––clinically––an inability to think and behave in ways considered to be normal.

Let’s Go To The Movies

Since I spent over 20 years as a New York State certified psychotherapist, whenever the subject of mental illness or “insanity” comes up in conversation with friends who have either read about an interesting case or are sharing a personal experience with me, I’m always reminded of the movie, “A Beautiful Mind,” in which Russell Crowe portrayed the brilliant mathematician and Princeton University professor John Nash, whose groundbreaking work in game theory won him a Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences .

In the middle––actually, more at the beginning of his illustrious career––Nash, at the age of 30, was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Usually, schizophrenia is diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 25 and is thought to be influenced by––but not the absolute cause of––the failure of the ventricles of the brain to close as they usually do in early adolescence. Common symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, social withdrawal, and generally bizarre behavior. To this day, the exact cause of schizophrenia is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve both genes and environment.

The Crime Question

While Nash, like most schizophrenics, never resorted to any semblance of violence, there are countless examples of seemingly perfectly “normal” people undergoing a change in personality and behavior so dramatic and profound, so outside of the norm, that both lay people and experts search for words and theories to explain it.

Among those mysteries––especially now that Lindsay Clancy has been tried for murdering her three young children and is now awaiting the verdict—it is useful to look back at similar cases in order to establish the difference between a crime committed out of base instincts like rage or jealousy or revenge, and a crime committed as a result of aberrational changes in the brain.

Susan

In 1994, Susan Smith was convicted of murdering her two sons, three-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander, by strapping them in their car seats and rolling her car into a lake in South Carolina. She tried to accuse a black man of kidnapping her sons, but that lie was quickly proven to be, um, a lie. She even went on national TV for nine days straight, sniffling on cue and making melodramatic pleas for her sons’ return. And her defense attorneys tried to say that mental health issues impaired her judgment, citing a genuine history of sexual abuse, depression, and suicide attempts. But when the real motivation for the murders was revealed––that her affair with a local wealthy man had ended when he sent her a letter saying he didn’t want children––the jury sentenced Smith to two concurrent life terms in prison, with the possibility of parole after 30 years. Her first appeal for parole in 2024 was denied.

Andrea

In 2001, Andrea Yates from Texas––her high-school class valedictorian and a registered nurse––drowned her five children in their bathtub––Noah Jacob, 7; John Samuel, 5; Paul Abraham, 3; Luke David, 2, and Mary, 6 months.

In the years leading up to the murders, she had exhibited severe postpartum depression , postpartum psychosis, and schizophrenia, as well as bulimia, and also suicidal ideation. In 2006, at her second trial, a jury found her not guilty by reason of insanity and she was committed to a high-security hospital. Today, nearly 25 years after the killings, Yates remains in a state mental health facility in Texas.

Dena

In 2004, Dena Schlosser, 35, from Texas, told a 911 operator that she had cut off her 10-month-old baby’s arms . Police found little Margaret in her crib and Schlosser holding the knife and listening to hymns. Ultimately, after doctors testified that she suffered from severe mood swings, hallucinations, and bipolar disorder, a jury found her not guilty by reason of insanity and committed her to a state psychiatric hospital. She was released in December 2008 into outpatient care but was recommitted in April 2010 after being observed walking on a street at 2:00 a.m. She remained in a state hospital until at least 2011, when she was again released. And you can’t make this up––she was roommates with Andrea Yates!

Dimone… Just The Other Day

A few days ago, a judge in the Bronx, NY, ruled that Dimone Fleming, 26, would not go to prison because of mental disease or defect, i.e., insanity. She admitted to repeatedly stabbing and killing her two little boys––three-year-old Daishawn and 11-month-old Octavius Canada––who were found lifeless in a bathtub of water. The report of the medical examiner said that “the boys suffered extensive stabbing and slicing wounds to their necks and surrounding areas. The ME determined that each child had four fatal wounds.”

Now here is the [incomprehensible] kicker: “Fleming is not being released. She remains in custody while another evaluation determines whether she continues to pose a danger to other people, and she is expected back in court on September 18.” Duh.

Constance

According to reporting by writer Johnathan Jones, “On March 8, 1954, a 24-year-old Maine housewife named Constance Fisher drowned her three children in a bathtub while battling postpartum depression and then attempted suicide…”

She was “sentenced” to spend five years at the Augusta State Hospital in Maine before her eventual release and a reconciliation with her husband, with whom she had three more children.

But in 1967––in a case impossible to wrap one’s mind around––she drowned those three children in another bathtub and was sent back to the hospital.

Kailey

Then there is Kailey Erhart, a 22-year-old North Dakota resident who recently stabbed her 5-month-old and 3-year-old children to death and seriously injured a third child after waving a gun at her estranged husband and threatening to kill herself, according to police. So far, she has not entered a plea, no mental health or insanity defense has been publicly presented in court, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 6.

Madeline

Wyoming resident Madeline Daly, 35, was recently convicted in a New Mexico courtroom for kidnapping and killing her infant son, shooting him in the face and then saying it was “ worth it ” to deprive his father of custody of the 11-month-old. Apparently, child murder is worth it if it devastates your spouse.

Lindsay

According to Tierney’s Real News , “On January 24, 2023, Lindsay Clancy strangled her three children—five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan—at the family’s home in Duxbury, Massachusetts. She then attempted suicide by cutting her wrists and neck and jumping from a second-story window. The injuries left her paralyzed from the waist down. Lindsay said she heard an auditory hallucination ordering her to kill her children and then kill herself and felt an irresistible urge to comply.”

Her defense attorneys maintained that Lindsay––a former labor-and-delivery room nurse––suffered from postpartum psychosis, bipolar disorder, and was severely over-medicated and therefore was not criminally responsible for these acts. Lindsay and her former husband also filed lawsuits against her doctor(s), saying that she had been over-medicated and that their malpractice contributed to the deaths of the children.

According to Tierney’s Real News, “During the four months prior to the murders…Lindsay was given 30 prescriptions for 13 different psychiatric medications including Zoloft, Ativan, Benadryl, Buspar, Ambien, Remeron, Klonopin, Trazadone, Prozac, Amitriptyline and Seroquel (an antipsychotic) ––all of which were found in her system. Seroquel (quetiapine) was found at DOUBLE normal levels.”

Suffering from many of the side effects of so many pills, as well as anxiety, sleeplessness, and thoughts of suicide, she also sought help from multiple therapists and institutions and did Internet searches on, among other things, “How to slit your throat to die.”

As of today, September 2, 2026, the “Lindsay Clancy Jury Says It’s Deadlocked After More than 17 Hours of Deliberation “.

In Massachusetts, the judge, Judge William Sullivan, can encourage the jury to go back to the jury room only twice, but after that, the judge can declare a mistrial.

Blame?

This case has aroused passions across the country. On one side are [mostly] women sending oceans of money to Lindsay Clancy in empathy for the suffering she has experienced and the hope that genuinely effective therapeutic hospitalization lies in her future. On the other side are those who see three innocent dead children and can hope for life imprisonment for a woman they don’t believe was insane at all.

The metaphor “Cancer is the schizophrenia of the body, just as schizophrenia is the cancer of the mind” is attributed to psychoanalyst and author Jane G. Goldberg. I personally believe that horrible afflictions––both body and mind––happen to human beings every minute of every day.

Should we blame Dolly Parton for the cancer that killed her? Should we blame theoretical astrophysicist Stephen Hawking for the hideous disease that afflicted and ultimately killed him, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)? Should we blame Bruce Willis for the dementia that robbed him of his senses, of his mind? The very idea is preposterous. And yet, mental illness is too often treated as a character flaw and not a very horrific physical malady.

Mental illness is as real and often as devastating as physical illness, although to this day it cannot be visualized on CT scans, MRIs, and PET scans as the afflictions of the body can be seen. Yes, we can now visualize when the ventricles of the brain don’t close in schizophrenia, but that’s about it.

And yet, with all the astounding medical and scientific progress and innovation that have taken place over the past several centuries, we still don’t know how and why the human species can produce a Beethoven, a Mother Teresa, a Ted Bundy, and a Hitler.

My empathy lies with Lindsay Clancy, whose brain, I believe, was attacked not with cancer but with a disease so annihilating that it led to her unspeakable crimes. Yes, crimes.

Not to the point of Not Guilty… but simply to the point of sending her, for life, not to a prison but to a mental hospital.

May her sweet children––and all the childhood victims of both mentally disturbed and malevolent murdering mothers––rest in peace in heaven.

DHS Asks DOJ to Investigate ERIC Data Transfers to Zuckerberg-Tied Nonprofit

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin asked Attorney General Todd Blanche to investigate whether the Electronic Registration Information Center violated the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act by collecting Social Security and driver’s license numbers from state motor vehicle records and sharing them with outside groups. Mullin’s letter, released Friday by the White House, said ERIC required member states to disclose data on people who were not registered to vote and later provided that information to the Center for Election Innovation and Research. CEIR received more than $70 million from the Chan Zuckerberg Foundation ahead of the 2020 election and issued grants to states that agreed to turn over the data. DHS officials said at least nine states authorized transfers covering more than 48 million registered voters, and Mullin wrote that emails from Georgia showed CEIR had coordinated outreach to people identified in motor vehicle files.

Missouri Supreme Court Bars GOP House Map From Midterms Pending Referendum

The Missouri Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously blocked a Republican-drawn congressional map from being used in the November midterms and said the 2022 districts remain in effect unless voters first approve the new lines. The court found that a referendum petition with more than 300,000 signatures was legal and timely, and that Republican Secretary of State Denny Hoskins wrongly refused to certify it. The 2025 map, signed by Gov. Mike Kehoe after a special session, was used in last month’s primaries and was designed to stretch US Rep. Emanuel Cleaver’s (D-MO) Kansas City district into rural Republican territory for a possible 7-1 GOP House edge. Attorney General Catherine Hanaway said she will appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court and called the timing after a primary a constitutional crisis. Trump Administration Asks Supreme Court to Restore USPS Mail Ballot Rules

The Trump administration on Thursday asked the Supreme Court to let the U.S. Postal Service enforce a new mail-in ballot rule after a Boston federal judge blocked it ahead of the November midterms. Solicitor General D. John Sauer called the rule a modest envelope-design and addressee requirements and said it regulates the mail, not state election control. The rule would require states to provide USPS with lists of mail-ballot recipients and unique barcodes on outbound and return envelopes, with noncompliant ballots possibly being refused. A whistleblower report cited problems building the matching portal and a zero-failure standard that could reject ballots without appeal. Officials recently said they were unsure whether the system was even operational. North Carolina is set to start mailing ballots Friday. States and voting groups warn the late change could scramble delivery as ballots enter the mailstream.

Nevada Active Rolls Fall 50,130 as Democrat Lead Shrinks to 672

Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar reported that active registration dropped by 50,130 in August to 2,062,136 voters after routine list maintenance before the National Voter Registration Act’s 90-day quiet period. Democrats now have 569,337 active voters and Republicans 568,665, a gap of 672. Nonpartisans remain the largest group at 796,805, or 38.64 percent. Inactive registrations total 426,577. Those voters can still cast a ballot, but no longer get mail ballots automatically. Aguilar’s office earlier said counties in 2025 canceled 176,928 registrations and moved 138,367 to inactive status. The secretary called the work ordinary roll-keeping so only eligible Nevadans vote.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals this week held that Connetquot Central School District on Long Island did not violate the First Amendment when it ordered three high school teachers to take down pride flags and door stickers. Judges Alison Nathan, Michael Park, and Maria Araújo Kahn said classroom wall decorations are speech that exists because of a teacher’s job and therefore count as government speech under Garcetti v. Ceballos. Math teacher Sarah Ecke had hung two pride flags after students complained. Officials offered a “safe space” sign and let an older pride flag stay. Teachers Christopher Dolce and Shinaide McAleavey-Polley were told to remove stickers from their doors. The panel rejected claims that sports banners and a French classroom flag proved viewpoint bias. The court said a pin on a blazer or a family photo would be different.

California Taxpayers Face Billions in New Levies After Session Closes

New and increased California taxes approved in the 2026 legislative session will extract billions more from residents already carrying some of the nation’s heaviest state tax loads. Artificial intelligence is being tasked with doing just about everything you can think of: writing computer code, producing advertising campaigns, generating movies, analyzing financial markets, designing weapons, operating factories, and reorganizing the modern workplace. Billions of dollars are pouring into a technological revolution that promises to alter virtually every aspect of human existence.

Yet an obvious question deserves considerably more attention — and far less polite delay: When will the enormous computing power being assembled by the world’s leading AI companies be systematically directed toward curing diseases that medicine has spent decades failing to defeat?

Few diseases make the question more urgent than Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

ALS remains one of medicine’s most unforgiving diagnoses. Scientists understand considerably more about the disease than they did a generation ago. Researchers have identified genetic mutations, abnormal proteins, inflammatory processes, cellular dysfunction, and numerous biological pathways associated with motor-neuron degeneration. Several treatments can even modestly alter aspects of the disease for some patients. Experimental approaches involving gene therapy, antisense technology, stem cells, peptides, neuroregeneration, immune modulation, and other mechanisms continue to be investigated.

But the fundamental reality hasn’t changed enough — and the pace of change is still being dictated by institutions that don’t live on the same clock as the patients.

A person diagnosed with ALS has been entered into a race against progressive neurological destruction. Meanwhile, researchers attempt to understand a disease whose biological complexity has repeatedly defeated conventional drug development. That isn’t a mystery that requires another decade of committee meetings. It’s a problem AI should already be attacking.

The traditional medical-research model depends heavily upon human beings developing hypotheses, designing experiments, analyzing results, publishing findings, and then beginning another cycle. It has produced extraordinary achievements, but it’s inherently constrained by the amount of information any one researcher or research team can absorb.

Modern biomedical science has generated something entirely different: an ocean of information.

Genomic databases, protein structures, clinical records, pathology reports, imaging studies, laboratory experiments, clinical trials, failed drug programs, molecular databases, published papers, and decades of accumulated research now contain relationships that no single scientist could possibly understand all at once.

Artificial intelligence, at least potentially, can.

Imagine an AI system built specifically around ALS research and given access to essentially the entire body of legitimate scientific knowledge about the disease. Instead of asking researchers to read several hundred studies, the system could analyze hundreds of thousands of papers, datasets, molecular interactions, clinical outcomes, genetic variations, and failed experiments.

More importantly, it could search for relationships that human beings have missed.

Perhaps a drug abandoned for one neurological disorder affects a pathway relevant to ALS. Perhaps patients with unusually slow progression share biological characteristics buried across separate datasets. Perhaps combinations of existing compounds produce effects that individual drugs don’t. Perhaps apparently unrelated research involving mitochondrial function, protein aggregation, neuroinflammation, axonal repair, or cellular metabolism contains pieces of the same larger puzzle.

AI doesn’t guarantee that such connections exist. But searching for them is exactly what machines are becoming exceptionally good at doing. Waiting for someone else to organize that search isn’t a strategy. It is foot-dragging dressed up as institutional prudence.

The obstacle is increasingly less about computational capability and more about priorities, organization, data access, and incentives.

America’s largest technology companies are spending extraordinary sums to build data centers and develop increasingly powerful models. Pharmaceutical companies possess enormous proprietary libraries of compounds, trial results, and biological information. Universities and government agencies possess additional mountains of research.

Unfortunately, much of this knowledge sits in separate institutional silos—and those silos are being treated as if they were inevitable, rather than a choice.

There is another possibility that belongs in the same conversation. A business that earns recurring revenue from managing chronic and terminal illness doesn’t automatically share the same urgency as a patient who won’t live long enough to become a long-term customer. Treatments that must be taken indefinitely can be more profitable than a one-time cure. Failed programs can be locked away. Promising combinations can stay untested if they threaten an existing franchise. None of that requires a cartoon villain. It only requires ordinary incentives. If AI can rapidly surface discarded compounds, buried trial data, and unexpected combinations, some firms may not be eager to open the vault. Sick people, after all, are still a market.

That is where leadership is needed, and where it has been conspicuously absent.

The federal government doesn’t need to nationalize medical research or dictate scientific conclusions. It could, instead, remove barriers to cooperation, establish carefully governed biomedical data standards, require or strongly incentivize companies to make failed clinical-trial information available for computational analysis, expand privacy-protected research datasets, and create real consequences for hoarding data that patients paid for with their bodies and their time. It could do those things right now. It has not.

Private philanthropy could play an equally important role in pushing this work forward.

Imagine a billion-dollar competition devoted to developing an AI system capable of identifying genuinely promising therapeutic targets for ALS. Imagine similar programs for pancreatic cancer, glioblastoma, Huntington’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and other devastating illnesses. The objective wouldn’t be to produce another chatbot capable of talking about medicine. It would be to create specialized scientific systems designed to generate hypotheses that laboratories could test—including hypotheses that existing commercial pipelines have little reason to pursue.

There must, of course, remain a human firewall between computational prediction and patient treatment. AI can generate a vast number of plausible hypotheses, including incorrect ones. Laboratory validation, animal studies where appropriate, carefully designed human trials, independent replication, and rigorous clinical judgment all remain indispensable.

But caution shouldn’t become an excuse for institutional inertia. Too often, it already has.

Terminally ill patients experience time differently from bureaucracies and quarterly earnings calls. A regulatory discussion lasting three years may seem reasonable from an institutional perspective. For someone with an aggressively progressive neurological disease, three years can represent an eternity they simply don’t have; time they cannot afford. That isn’t a rhetorical flourish. It’s the difference between a life and a file.

That reality should create urgency without abandoning scientific standards. What it shouldn’t create is another round of polite statements about “the promise of AI” while people lose the ability to walk, speak, swallow, and breathe.

The great promise of artificial intelligence isn’t that machines will replace physicians or scientists. It’s that machines may allow them to investigate biological complexity at a scale previously impossible.

We are approaching an extraordinary historical choice. Humanity can devote unprecedented computing resources primarily toward making advertisements more efficient, entertainment more personalized, financial trading faster, and office work cheaper. Or some meaningful portion of that technological power can be deliberately aimed at humanity’s oldest enemy: disease — even when a cure is less convenient than a subscription.

ALS would be an incredibly appropriate place to begin.

There are thousands of families for whom artificial intelligence isn’t primarily an interesting technological development. They are watching a clock, and when that clock strikes the hour, a loved one is lost forever.

These families deserve to know when Silicon Valley, the pharmaceutical industry, universities, medical institutions, philanthropists, and government research agencies intend to treat curing terminal disease with the same urgency now being devoted to building the next generation of artificial intelligence profit—instead of treating the delay as someone else’s problem or someone else’s profit center.

The machines are becoming powerful enough to ask questions that science could never realistically ask before.

The question now is whether we have the will to point them at the problems that matter most, or whether we will keep finding reasons to wait while the people who need answers run out of time.

House Set to Vote on Amendment Fixing Supreme Court at Nine Justices

The House is expected to vote this week on H.J. Res. 1, a proposed constitutional amendment from Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), that would lock the Supreme Court at nine justices, one chief and eight associates. The court’s size is now set by statute and can be changed by a simple majority in Congress. The last change came in 1869. An amendment would require two-thirds votes in both chambers and ratification by 38 states within seven years. Speaker Mike Johnson said the measure would force Democrats to take a public position after some in the party, including Rep. Al Green (D-TX), floated expanding the bench to 13. House Democrat Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar (D-CA) called the vote a midterm “show vote” and said he would oppose it. The Judiciary Committee approved the resolution 15-8 in June along party lines.

Eight Democrats Join Republicans as House Denounces Socialism

The House on Tuesday adopted a nonbinding resolution condemning socialism in all its forms, including the Democratic Socialists of America, and calling for enactment of the SAVE America Act.
